Learn more Download For WindowsHey Y'all BPRadiant here with the first deck of the new season. I was very excited for this set to drop as I think that it fills some gaps we have in Standard Brawl as well as some differentiation in Historic Brawl. We are rocking Toxrill, the Corrosive as our commander today with the idea of playing Big Dimir. We are going for a control shell with our top end being all the big splashy payoffs that Dimir has that can close out games. And for those wondering Slugadactle is a Bob's Burgers reference since I can't get the song out of my head when I play this deck.
You can find the decklist above and if you enjoy the list please check out the video for some gameplay attached to it.
DECK TECH
So we start with a very basic control shell of counter spells and removal. You're gonna run the standard Tale's End, Counterspell, and Swan Song that you'll see in most lists. In addition we are adding a new counter that will be everywhere soon enough and that's Wash Away this is a staple in 1v1 Commander formats like Historic Brawl as at best it's a U counter their commander and at worst a cancel so its a very good card.
For removal we are picking up mostly cards that are somewhat flexible in their choices. We want some hand hate with Thoughtseize and Thought Erasure. We then want our stuff like Feed the Swarm, Hero's Downfall, and Elspeth's Nightmare to pull double duty with target selection. We are going to be looking for our board wipes first and foremost then going to use spot removal from there to try to control the board. I avoided going full on removal.dec in this list but if you prefer some of the options like Narset, Tome of the Infinite, Thaumatic Compass, and Cling to Dust could be shifted to make room for more. I just like the options and flexibility they gave the deck.
Mention of Honored Heirloom as probably the best common/uncommon mana rock now as it also gives repeatable graveyard interaction. And you would be surprised at how often that comes up when compared to some of the other options you can get stapled onto your 3 drop rocks now. I personally rate this thing really high up their.
The BIG in BIG DIMIR
So here is going to be the things that can just run away with games.
First we have Toxrill, the Corrosive and Sludge Monster. These have incredible synergy together and honestly are a sight to behold. Making it to in 1 turn cycle you kill anything and everything on the board is a really impressive lock against creature decks. And the fact that Toxrill doesn't target makes it even better as Hexproof is getting more and more cards that are strong against control. The fact that you can then get creatures off whatever Toxrill kills is just gravy that you can use to be the beatdown or draw cards.
Black Market Lots of stuff is going to die. And you need a lot of mana when your Commander will commonly hit 11+ mana to cast. This is gonna give you that mana over and over again. It's basically the golos of enchantments. You can remove my commander but now that just covered half the commander tax. This card is really strong with high costed decks as it brings a lot of explosive power to late game boards.
A few of our other win the game if unanswered cards are going to be The Scarab God as he just generates a ton of value as the game progresses and Xanathar, Guild Kingpin as he lets us generate value by playing our opponents stuff. Which also just happens to be really fun. We also have the new card Hullbreaker Horror making a spot as it can help us to keep a board locked and in my opinion is slightly better than the options we've had before with Nezahal. Sticking him and even just bluffing cards in had has won me games in limited, brawl, and standard. One of our last true win cons is going to be Shark Typhoon since it allows us to turn any non creature into a creature as well and this really puts pressure on other decks to remove it. Against decks that can't quickly the value we generate is tremendous.
We also decided to put a few graveyard recursion options in with Command the Dreadhorde, Rise of the Dark Realms, and Sheoldred, Whispering One in since we're already paying a lot for these payoffs lets have some ways to get them back as well as some of our opponents stuff as well. Really just kinda fitting this sense of inevitiblity that people get playing against us.
My last piece of advice for the deck is to either have a counter up when you play Toxrill or find other ways to bait out removal as since they are the commander your opponent is gonna prepare for it. Just remember that even if he gets removed the tokens don't for the next time the slug comes out.
Another route I see this going is if you go Horror tribal but I didn't see a lot of power in that but I'll def be looking to iterate on this. Off the top I see myself taking out Tome of Legends for Thief of Sanity but we'll see after some more testing.
Thanks for reading all this far and I hope ya'll have a great weekend!
Be Radiant!
