Top Standard Decks - December 2024
We have a deluge of new cards (and lots of classic reprints) thanks to MTG Foundations. While it is a relatively minor bump right now, it is still part of the major changes to the accepted sets in Standard that would effectively make it Pioneer-lite very soon. But before newer tentpole UB sets make it to the most frontline format of this game, we take one final look at the Standard meta for this year to see how it changed and adjusted. For this particular list, I will ignore the usual rule of excluding reprints in newly featured cards for obvious purposes.
Standard Tournament Meta - Top 8 Decks
The complete and rather sudden disappearance of Golgari was a bit of a shock to November's Standard meta due to its original ranking of usually being 4th or higher since Wilds of Eldraine. But, the surge of relevant cards in Duskmourn probably contributed to its exit. For Standard events, this trend seems to have continued, and Golgari seems to still be well outside of the top 8 (though still fairly close at 10th). The top three however, just exchanged places as usual (Dimir, Mono-Red, Gruul), despite a few of the other decks having newly revived toys to play with.

On BO3, Golgari makes a comeback thanks to many reclaimed Foundations cards. It jumps all the way to the top as well, outracing our expected top three rankers (Azorius, Dimir, Mono Red), and even makes a second deck within the list as well. The sad thing though is that Mono Black, Rakdos, and Selesnya instantly fall way under the mark due to the double entries, plus Boros' new(?) toys.

Boros maintains its place at the top spot, with the rest of the other entries the usual switcheroos. Ironically, another Boros is also at the very tail end of the list at 8th, which is probably the only reason why we didn't get three Mono Black entries this time around. Though, technically we also lost the second Azorius entry that made it to 5th place last month.
