Description

This deck is basically the old popular Esper control deck, but updated to mill the opponent.

I was never very satisfied with the classic esper control, because of the narrow winning condition, so I updated it and i've been testing it, so far getting a bit over 50% win rate and doing better in Bo1, which can be good if you like playing Bo1 and Esper, given that the original Esper works better in Bo3

1. The combination I am using is mostly for bo1 and is well around balanced deck

2. I put Teferi, Hero of Dominaria and Kaya, Orzhov Usurper out in the sideboard, putting them back in bo3 games is good, when you feel your opponent can counter your mill tactics. The deck is versatile and goes from milling Esper to classic control Esper.

3. If the opponent is very aggressive with you, feel free to change Thought Collapse with Absorb or viceversa

4. No Escape is useful card if you notice the enemy is playing lately sorta popular planeswalkers deck or relies on creatures especially those who you want to be exiled rather than putted in graveyard. Scrying helps too with control

5. I found that having both Drowned Secrets and Search for Azcanta is nice. They have some sort of synergy and I honestly don't want to give anyone up so far. If you have to choose, get rid of Drowned Secrets with priority. Probably leaving 1 and 1 from each is not a good idea, better leave 2 of one of them

6. Play with the multicolored lands only if you plan to use Mastermind's Acquisition into Nicol Bolas, Dragon-God (or some other sideboard card with multiple colors). If not - just use basic swamp and island. I was lazy to change because in around 100 games I never found myself significantly slowered by having them in my normal hand thus never caused me a loss, although I realize this might happen at some point to somebody :D. Still testing if I should get rid of 1 land for some other card, however I don't feel I am flooded by lands

7. As any mill deck playing it requires a bit of luck. For example if you play vs Mono red aggro who can kill you in 4 turns and you don't get proper cards at the start, you won't achieve much. It is still very fun to play however

8. Jace, Wielder of Mysteries is a good card, but I prefered having more control over aggressive milling. Maybe if you use it, you can try to self mill instead, I haven't tried yet.

9. Wall of Lost Thoughts is questionable card, i'd rather have control cards than walls, but I guess it can be used if you plan to mill aggressively

10. Feel free to give suggestions in the comments
