Learn more Download For WindowsThis Meren deck utilizes a combination of strategies to overwhelm opponents with value and advantage. Here's a breakdown of the core elements and some interesting interactions:
While not a full-on "rat tribal" deck, you have a decent swarm of Rats and cards that benefit from them. I say not full-on rat tribal because we'll be using them as sac fodder and reanimating them with Meren's ability and sacrifice outlets. However, things like Karumonix, the Rat King, Ogre Slumlord, Marrow-Gnawer, Piper of the Swarm, and Vanquisher's Banner can help create a pretty mighty board state, if that's how the cards fall.
With Meren, we don't mind things dying. So, we'll lean into that aristocratic style, which means we need three things - Stuff that we want to die, ways to help it die, and things that trigger when they (or other things) die. One last thing to add to the recipe is ways to reanimate what we sac, so we can do it all over and over. That's where Meren shines but we have a few more ways too.
Almost any creature in the deck is expendable under the right circumstances because of Meren. Some other cards that help out with this are things like Eternal Witness, Echoing Return, and Patriarch's Bidding. While things like Blood Artist, Zulaport Cutthroat, Grim Haruspex, Skullclamp, and Moldervine Reclamation all generate value from the death triggers. My personal favorite in this department is Syr Konrad, the Grim because he triggers on death and reanimation.
The last thing I want to mention is Gray Merchant of Asphodel. We have a lot of black mana symbols in the deck (Ayara, First of Locthwain, Braids, Arisen Nightmare, Karumonix, the Rat King, etc.), and Gray Merchant counts his own symbol too, and this is a putrid card. Once you start reanimating this with Meren, you'll win the game quickly. So, I wanted to mention it. You can also tutor this out with Fiend Artisan.
