Learn more Download For WindowsWelcome to Grixis War Crimes. We are taking the new named mechanic of Crime, something we've been doing all along apparently within Magic, and leaving scorched earth.
We are a legend heavy deck meaning we are an expensive deck, unfortunately. While in paper this might not end up being exhorberent, in MTGA it is ruthless.
All of our creatures commit a crime or benefit from commiting a crime and thus we benefit from crime. What could Wizards have meant by this?
Starting at the bottom, we have Tinybones, the Pickpocket who lets us target our opponents graveyard to steal their creatures or any other nonland permanents that we might be interested in. Vladmir, New Blood starts of as a 2/2 but grows with every crime and earns menace and lifelink and becomes large and needs to be taken care of with nothing really more than being a big booty or our opponent will let him live until it's far too late. Lazav, Wearer of Faces let's us pick apart some other creatures from the opponents graveyard, make clues to turn him into those exiled creatures and draw cards, commits a crime in the process, and can turn from a 2/3 into something he has exiled. Magda, the Hoardmaster will give us a tapped treausre token for the next turn after a crime, or if you have 3 you can sacrifice them and make a 4/4 hasty dragon which is really the goal unless you absolutely need those treasures to cast something, or draw a card. Because with Marchesa, Dealer of Death your crimes essentially give you a choice of a draw from 2 cards for 1 mana helping you filter what you need and what you don't want. Which also helps fuel Lazav as you'll want to be casting cards from the opponents yard with Tinybones. Lord Skitter, Sewer King gives us additional 1/1 bodies, lets us remove lands and non-permanents from the opponents yard if that's their strategy or it's 'up to' trigger we can skip altogether if we want to cast the permanent. Our last creature rounds us off at the top in Gisa, the Hellraiser. Commit a crime, get 2 2/2 zombies, they are tapped, but they'll be good to go next round.
Moving on to non creatures, we have some removal in Cut Down, Go for the Throat, and Long Goodbye. 3 Make Dissapear appear to slow down any control or board control while we set up and help against potential board wipes. Finally, we have some new enchantments. Tinybones Joins Up commits a crime everytime a legendary creature enters the battlefield which is every creature we cast from our deck and a single Rakdos Joins Up to punish spot removal and recur a creature from the yard and make it bigger.
Lands are mostly what you'd expect in a 3 color deck. No triomes here though. We have some Restless Reef as it commits a crime on attack and Plaza of Heroes as it can help protect our legendary board if need be and just spends mana we need based on whats on the board.
Our sideboard is a Harvester of Misery for more spot removal or a board wide -2/-2. Binding Negotiation lets us pick apart their hand or remove a plotted or adventure card from those special exile zones. Disdainful Stroke and Negate for matchups where we want more control for longer games or those big mana domain decks with lots of removal and high cost spells. Path of Peril will only hit a few of our targets which Lazav can evade if we have the 2 mana and clue to sacrifice, but is much needed against aggro decks. Unlicensed Hearse for more graveyard hate if needed thats harder for our opponent to deal with than Tinybones or Lazav.
And there you have it. A mid-range Grixis deck full of legends that is definitely a War Crime. As I said, it's not cheap, most the rares are in the mana base, but even so, it's 41 rares and 5 mythics. It's not cheap, but it's sure has hell fun to play.
