Description

Hello again AetherHub. Long time, no see! This is Grixis Flash, a control-style deck built around disrupting the opponent's hand to prevent them from making plays that could impact the board to our detriment. In other words: look at their cards. Take their threats. Profit.

image

This is how we get our Flash. One of these in the opening hand allows us to Duressimage our opponent's draw, and we will continue to do that  with Thought Erasureimage and later, Drill Bitimage.

Why Drill Bit? Honestly, I went back and forth for a while debating whether to put Drill Bit or Toll of the Invasionimage in the list. I decided to work around spectacle a bit and selected a number of cards to provide ping damage (like Carnival//Carnage and Big Chandra), cards that were flexible enough to be useful in a variety of matchups.

This list has not been tuned for Bo3 play, and the following segments are not sideboarding guides.*

Against Aggro/Midrange

For our matchup against a faster deck, we have God-Eternal Kefnetimage and Enter the God-Eternalsimage. Kefnet is very hard to deal with, and 5 toughness makes him a great blocker. EtGE (is that the best acronym?) is the ideal midrange card with a text box that spans as large as the card art. If they go wide, roast their weenies with Flame Sweepimage.

Against Control/Combo

Our hand hate is key to winning here. Duress and Thought Erasure away their Teferis, their own TE, their scapeshifts, etc. Disinformation Campaignimage provides good card advantage. Chandra, Awakened Infernoimage, our top end play, can tick away at their life total even if she gets removed after the first emblem. Keep in mind that if you flash Chandra in on their end step, they will have opportunity to target her with the likes of Vraska's Contempt before you get to activate her, so you actually want to play her in your main phase most of the time.

That's mostly all there is to it. Just draw what you need for the given situation, and you'll be fine. Good ol' Grixis piles.

EDIT 8/3/19: Changed out 2x Angrath for 2x Nicol Bolas, Dragon-Godimage. It's Grixis. You have to have Bolas! Also, he's rotation-proof and probably just a stronger walker.

*Yes, there are 2 cards in the sideboard here, but I was too lazy to develop a full sideboard + plan.

Yoink!

Who needs to negate Scapeshift for 2 mana when you can just steal it for 4? Other anti-Scapeshift tech considered during the making of this list include:

  • Bedeck//Bedazzle (waiting for turn 6 to destroy 1 field of the dead doesn't seem great, to me, but it is decent creature removal in other matchups)
  • Selective Snareimage (doesn't address the recurring threat, Field of dead, itself)

Does scapeshift combo really merit specific hate in the sideboard? I'm not sure that it does, but that deck can be real annoying to face. In any case, flame sweep will destroy their zombie tokens, so they shouldn't be too big of a problem, as long as they only come in one big burst and don't trickle in one at a time for the next 20 turns. Oh. Huh.
