Learn more Download For WindowsI mentioned a while ago in my previous write ups that I really like playing control decks. This deck has been doing me a lot of good in the recent weeks! I figured I would take the time to share with you my list and give a few explanations for cards.
Why only 24 lands?
To be completely honest, I don't feel like i have too many mana issues with the deck. If anything, I feel like oi get flooded more often that not lol.
Card Choices
This section will not cover the "Obvious" card choices. Rather, it will focus on the personal tech cards I have chosen to use in the list.
In a BO1 Format, this card is a lot better in the main deck than in a BO3 format. Primarily due to the large number of creature decks (both aggro and midrange) that you will find on the ladder. We don't run a full 4 of them because the card isn't THAT good to have in your hand if you are fighting against more controlling matchups. If you wanted to hedge your bets against Midrange and control, Syncopate is a fair replacement for the card.
I've seen some lists that run other win conditions in their main decks but I have a special fondness for Lyra. Lyra can pull you out of a losing game unlike many other win conditions that the deck has access too. Not to mention in the later game, it is much easier to play her with counterspell backup as well.
My personal recommendation is only play her if you KNOW that you can protect her or that you know your opponent cannot kill it. Any other time is a complete waste of a great win condition. No need to play her directly on turn 5 unless you're playing against very aggressive lists. Most midrange decks will have plenty of ways of removing her from the board.
Depose // Deploy
Both sides of this card are very good against aggressive decks. Depose can tap down a creature giving you an extra turn to dig into an answer. Not to mention, it draws a card on it's own. Deploy does so many things on its own. It gives you blockers, healing and a win condition (albeit a very slow win condition) in the control matches.
Warrant // Warden
In mosts games, bricking your opponents next draw can be backbreaking an in MTG, it's no different. Placing a creature on the top of your opponent's deck ensures you know what their next draw is going to be and if they are low on cards, it can flatout win you a game. Too many times I have had people concede to me because i placed a card they REALLY didn't want on top of their deck back on top and they had 1 card in hand. The Warden side of this card is yet another win condition but primarily, this card is used for Warrant.
