Specter of Shadows

image image image

This is my best attempt to create a Spector tribal, the completely embraces the idea of discard to defeat your opponents in both their hit points and moral.

The Creatures:

Lazav, the Multifariousimage is a versatile shapeshifter that can assume the role of one of our Specters, effectively doubling up on their unique abilities. Furthermore, Lazav can transform into any creature we happen to steal with our next Thief.

Thief of Sanityimage is undoubtedly one of the most vexing cards in the game. Not only does it effectively mill our opponent by 3 cards, but it also allows us to pilfer a card from their deck, granting us the opportunity to cast it. Additionally, it serves as an impressive flying threat, adding to the pressure we apply.

Fell Specterimage may be a bit costly for its stats, it proves to be effective in practice. It becomes a means for our opponents to lose life when they are forced to discard cards, creating additional challenges for them.

The Spells:

Duressimage serves as a valuable means to discard spells that may disrupt our carefully crafted game plan.

Thoughtseizeimage as the first turn play takes the crown, and it might even catch our opponents off guard, leading to an instant concession. However, we must exercise caution, as the 2 life cost can quickly add up, and we have very little life gain built into the deck.

Vicious Rumorsimage provides a cost-effective method to force our foes to discard, while also granting us a small life gain and milling one card, which conveniently helps fill the graveyard for our next move.

Drown in the Lochimage is one of the finest spells Dimir has to offer, it presents us with versatile options, allowing us to either counter or destroy threats based on the number of cards in our opponents' graveyard.

Go for the Throatimage and Test of Talentsimage are best when it comes to removal and selective counters, both are excellent options:  Though I tend to lean more towards the removal aspect, there's no denying the brutal efficiency of Test of Talents when it successfully thwarts an opposing spell. Nevertheless, our ability to remove specific threats that enter the battlefield remains paramount in my eyes.

Path of Perilimage offers a comprehensive board wipe, decimating everything with a converted mana cost of 2 or less. This wipe barely affects us, and if we utilize Lazav's ability, we can even avoid its impact. Additionally, we have splashed a bit of white mana into the deck with Raffine's Towerimage for emergencies, allowing us to pay the "Cleave" cost and clear the board.

Unmoored Egoimage functions as our surgical tool. Once we get a glimpse of our opponents' hands or identify threats that could severely harm us down the line, we surgically remove those very threats, effectively neutralizing their strategies.

The Other Stuff:

Waste Notimage is an indispensable inclusion for any discard-themed deck. While I'm tempted to run a full set of 4, I decided to test the waters with this configuration for a while. This card proves to be a valuable source of various resources, including much-needed card draw, which plays a crucial role in our deck's overall strategy.

Davriel, Rogue Shadowmageimage, he stands tall as our primary win condition. Once he takes the stage, our opponents will gradually succumb to the relentless burn effect, provided we have adequately shut down their strategies. However, with the diverse array of threats present in this deck, Davriel won't bear the entire burden alone. Together, our deck can deliver a multifaceted assault that keeps our foes on their toes and secures our path to victory.

The Gameplan:

The core strategy of this deck revolves around masterfully dismantling your opponent's hand. By forcing them to discard crucial cards, you gain significant control over their resources. Aiming to disrupt their mana curve should be a top priority, as it weakens their options and plays right into your hands. Embrace the long game, skillfully locking them down while you set up your own plans.

Thief of Sanityimage acts as your wildcard, introducing intriguing elements from their deck into your own arsenal. As you progress, keep a keen eye on your cheap sorceries, preserving your options for the few, yet critical, instant spells that may be needed to tip the scales in your favor. Remember, timing is key, and executing your moves with precision will lead you to victory.
