Learn more Download For WindowsThis is a new take on the Simix Manipulation deck. I took it to FNM and went undefeated, then took to a local tournament and made it to the semi-finals. The match I lost was strictly on mana issues, which happens. Though, I would love to use Agent of Treachery to get card draw, it is not the main focus. In fact, I find myself boarding it out between each match all the time. That doesn't mean that it is bad, as I really want it in agaisnt Esper and Nexus decks to steal an enchantment where needed.
I found myself really enjoying Voracious Hydra where I may considering dropping one Frilled Mystic or one Ripjaw Raptor (though Ripjaw has proven itself a lot), or removing Agent of Treachery for the third copy of the hydra.
Sideboard has the usual suspects, with a few new ideas in both Ashiok, Dream Render and Loaming Shaman. The shaman was one that I wrestled with for a little while, but decided that it was worth the try, with my main focus to include it against Esper deck and maybe against Golgari or Sultai decks, basically decks that have counters and/or removal.
This was a card that took some time to find itself in the deck, as it took my other Vivien Reid spot. But, I have been seeing Scapeshift becoming ever more popular, and I wanted an extra way of dealing with that deck other than Negate. This card effectively will shutdown the ability of your opponent from searching their library, so you just have to deal with the board the old fashion way. Just be sure to protect it as much as possible, as the scapeshift player will take every opportunity to kill Ashiok when possible.
I got the chance to play against Boros Angels, Feather, Mono-Red, Esper Control, Vampires, GW Explore. When playing against the angel deck I will say be patient when it comes to your steals, there is always a bigger angel coming by turn 5. Against mono-red, if you have the opportunity to steal the opponent's Runaway Steam-Kin, do it, and definitely the Goblin Chainwhirler. Forcing your opponent to deal with their key cards is instrumental in turning the tide in those matches. Against vampires, be prepared to be down a bunch of life in the beginning as they gain life on the opposite side, but you will have several chump blocks (including you creature lands) until you can steal their creatures, and turn the game around. Esper (anything) is all about setup, with the knowing that you will be board wiped a few times. Just continue to push through to kill off Teferi, counter when possible, then overrun when possible all while holding a Negate or having cards in hand to rebuild.
I had a lot of fun updating this deck, even if not always the style that I play.
Hope you enjoy!
