Learn more Download For WindowsWhen Obosh was spoiled I really wanted to make a faceburn deck work. I was thinking Gruul to ramp into Ob and take advantage of Klothys pinging for 4 every turn, but I've found this deck to be very fun.
Strategy is to drop some cheap 1/1 fliers, mutate up to a bigger body, remove threats, land Obosh with an extra mana or two to swing in for near lethal, then burn em outfor 4 or 6 with shock or skewer.
We're playing a pretty low curve other than Obosh himeself. Everything is a 1 or 3, but Izzet has tons of ways to turn your 3-drops into 2-drops with Brazen Borrower, Lore Drakkis, and Bonecrusher Giant. So Bonecrusher giant, as a card with a CMC of 3, still stomps for 4 when Obosh is on-board, then can come down as an 8/3. Lore Drakkis turns your Spectral Sailor or Faerie Miscreant into a 2/3 or 4/3 and let's you tutor a burn spell out of the graveyard.
Flame Spill is great removal with upside. Ideally it's doing 8 with spillover. Unfortunately I seem to be forced to use these before landing Obosh, then don't end up drawing them after. If anyone knows if this actually does not work, please let me know.
Phoenix of Ash seems to win the most games here.
Biggest issue with this deck is you run out of gas. I thought of playing a few less lands and going Light Up the Stage, or playing Risk Factor to get some burn in, but that doesn't feel that much cheaper than sailors. I think I just need to learn to pull the trigger when I'm sitting on 4 mana and the opponent Heartless Act's him when he's got the octopus mutated on.
I really want Lore Drakkis to be a thing. I feel like being able to pull spells from the yard is a very powerful feature and there must be some better ways to take advantage than grabbing Shock's, but staying low seems to be the way to go for now with all the aggro popping up. Not sure this will be able to do much against the bigger control decks, but it's really fun to win with Obosh and a burn spell or two.
