This is a Historic mono-black midrange deck built around Phylactery Lich and Phyrexian Obliterator. I found the devotion build with Gray Merchant of Asphodel to be unreliable and slow, so I built the deck without weak devotion creatures like Tymaret, Chosen from Death or Yarok's Fenlurker. This opened up more card slots for artifacts and spells to make the deck more competitive against the historic metagame.
To enable Phylactery Lich, cheap artifacts like Shadowspear, Grafdigger's Cage, and Treasure Map // Treasure Cove are necessary to play the Lich on curve. Treasure Map // Treasure Cove has a neat interaction where phylactery counters from Phylactery Lich stay on the permanent when Treasure Map transforms, making the Lich even harder to remove since the counters are on a land.
Karn, Scion of Urza, Arguel's Blood Fast // Temple of Aclazotz, Castle Locthwain, and Treasure Map // Treasure Cove are the card-advantage engines of the deck. Karn can also make artifact creatures for phylactery counters, and these creatures get boosted by Treasure tokens from transforming a Treasure Map. I like a one-of Arguel's Blood Fast as a faster Castle Locthwain.
Enchanting a Phylactery Lich with Eternal Thirst is fun combo to annihilate red mages with a 5/5 indestructible lifelinker. Knight of the Ebon Legion is also a good target for Eternal Thirst in the mid- to late-game once you can pump it up. Eternal Thirst is very powerful in the right matchups, and its ability to add +1/+1 counters shouldn't be ignored.
Phyrexian Obliterator is the curve-topper capable of taking over games by itself. Exceptional against aggro decks, but is weaker in control matchups.
Sideboard:
Languish and Ritual of Soot are sweepers for matchups like Elves and Mono-White lifegain that go too wide for the main deck to handle.
Drag to the Underworld replaces Never // Return in matchups where the opponent is not playing planeswalkers, and instant-speed removal is more imperative (i.e., Questing Beast).
Noxious Grasp against green or white decks.
Damping Sphere against Forsaken Monument, Nissa, Who Shakes the World, and Arclight Phoenix decks.
Leyline of the Void against Rakdos Arcanist, Lurrus of the Dream-Den, and any other deck that relies on its graveyard.
Grafdigger's Cage against graveyard decks, Jund Sacrifice, Collected Company, and Muxus, Goblin Grandee.
Underworld Dreams against Gandalfs (Blue-White Control).
Vraska's Contempt for when instant-speed exile is really important.
