Description

Mono Black Devotion for Pioneer

Midrange-ish deck that is trying to curve into Gary as efficiently as possible, while keeping value in mind across the board. All of the threats deployed are a must answer the moment they land and provide either immediate value or immense value if you untap with them.

Thoughtseize provides turn 1 disruption and most importantly takes the first removal from hand, in order to land pack rats and dreadhorde invasions. Won’t go into what thoughtseize does in general and why it’s strong in general, the internet is a better source

Pack Rat - the power of the rat is extreme when not answered. It's a must answer threat that clears the hand of removal or provides incremental power. Mutavault is in the deck because it's a rat and pumps up the pack rats.

Dreadhorde Invasion provides both a turn by turn board or sac fodder for the likes of Ayara and Rankle.

Ayara - answer this on spot or you get an unstoppable engine that gives 3 devotion to boot. The longer she stays on the board the better your game is going to go. Neat trick - sac with ayara the zombie token from invasion in response to the invasion trigger on upkeep, draw a card, the trigger resolves, creates a new zombie and you drain for 1.

Nightveil specter - 3 devotion, flying, card advantage, must answer, play it

Murderous Rider - removal on legs. Gives 2 devotion and lifelink when played as a creature (while most likely taking out a walker of sorts before that).

Rankle - strongest black 4 drop in the format. Gives 2 devotion. Flying, haste, does a shitton of things when it connects. His only drawback is that he’s legendary :(

Ravenous Chupacabra - I am opting to play 3 chupacabra because removal on legs is the best removal. Removal on legs that drops before gary and gives 2 devotion is even better. The card just stacks up the removal package in the deck and interacts positively with absolutely all synergies. Can even be pitched to Pack Rat

Gary - yeap

Removal - Just to keep you going. In the main, it plays 10 removals, including 5 walker removals (which i think is very relevant given the availability of Narset, T3f3ri and Oko. More in the side
