Learn more Download For WindowsThis deck is ALL about value - through Jolrael, Mwonvuli Recluse, Chevill, Bane of Monsters and Binding the Old Gods. I haven't been posting my decks lately, nor writing about them, so let's hop back in! If you're new to my page, I try to write piloting guides with all of my decks, and I encourage you to try them out for yourself and see how you fare! Let's see how this one plays out:
Early Game: You can start with a bit of hand disruption, or getting one of your copies of the rares out (Jolrael/Chevill). Jolrael tends to not be too much of a target in the early game, which is great for us. You have flexibility with your lands (thanks MDFCs!), so play them as you need to. Both Jolrael and Chevill are nice against little 1/1s from the mono-white aggro and mono-red decks, so you shouldn't be overrun.
Mid Game: Let's get value down! You are either destroying their best non-land permanent with Binding the Old Gods, or drawing your second card with any: Llanowar Visionary, Rankle, Master of Pranks, or killing a creature with a bounty counter on it. The midgame is all about disrupting your oppponent while getting that second card (and cat!) or the ramp from Binding/Llanowar. If you have Jolrael out, try to see when it's best to get Binding of the Old Gods out, because Chapter III is a great one for a go-wide finish. Boardwipes aren't a problem, because our 4-drop slot is stacked with value or haste, so we can apply pressure right back at 'em.
Late Game: At this point, you've likely disrupted a card from their hand or two, and destroyed whatever they've put down, all the while getting your value in. Elder Gargaroth might still be alive for you because they've used removal on the brutal midgame you've thrown at them. Keep focusing on drawing your second card each turn. Now, if you set up with Binding from earlier, you're in for a nice swing. When Chapter III triggers, all of your lovely jungle cats will have deathtouch, and your opponent needs to again lose board presence or take a lot of damage. I've had people concede at this point, more so than actually getting to swing. Alternatively, Toski, Bearer of Secrets will help all of your cats bury your opponent in card advantage, all the while triggering more cats to be made.
Strengths: Creature-based strategies for sure. Your creatures have a great combination of pressure Questing Beast and Rankle, and value from the deck's namesake. Binding, Questing Beast, and Murderous Rider allow us to not be too concerned with planeswalkers.
Weaknesses: With good board removal Battle of Frost and Fire, Doomskar, and Shatter the Sky, going around, you might find yourself needing to rebuild a bunch when facing Azorius and Jeskai control decks. But you can match against that in the sideboard (see below).
Sideboarding Tips: When you do face that control deck, focus more on your hand-disruption spells, bring in that third copy of Duress for sure. Ensure that you have that third Questing Beast, because that alone might make the control player scoop. Plummet and Oakhame are filler sideboard cards. I'm considering putting in Ranger Guile's or those type of effects in place, that, or maybe just Feed the Swarm, but I like these for now.
Let me know how the deck goes! We are new into Kaldheim, so let's see if this deck holds once the meta becomes more solidified. Feel free to suggest edits or ask questions! Happy battling!
