I would say this deck is noncompetitive. Can it win? Sure. Is it good, probably not.
Izzet a fun tribal wizard deck? Absolutely. The deck is still in testing and is being changed as more games are played.
The Creatures:
- Naban, Dean of Iteration: Gives the deck some tricks with cards such as Merfolk Trickster, Champion of Wits, Naru Meha, Master Wizard, and Ghitu Journeymage.
- Nimble Obstructionist: May seem as an odd choice, but it works fairly well. Making the choice between holding up a counter spell or flashing it in on the end of your opponents end step, having a 3/1 flyer is fairly nice. Rarely does the cycling effect come into play but is a nice stifle effect.
- Ghitu Lavarunner: Becomes a 2/2 fairly easily, and the haste can sometimes be relevant.
- Adeliz, The Cinder Wind: Very useful and can push the deck over the edge. 2/2 flyer with haste. Can be used to power through a board with your wizards or can be used as a combat trick.
- Naru Meha, Master Wizard: Wizard lord and has flash? Good for baiting out your opponent into blocking unfavorably or even giving you that extra bit of damage. Its enter the battlefield isn't too much of an investment considering most of our instant and sorceries are essentially 1-2 mana.
- Champion of Wits: Can wheel 2 dud cards or as a means to dig for an answer. Its eternalize ability is costly, it will rarely be relevant.
- Merfolk Trickster: Has flash, can be used as a combat trick. Can clear a board for your wizard army.
- Ghitu Journeymage: Shock your opponent, sometimes deals 4 with the added bonus of getting a creature. It is arguable to add or remove this.
The Spells:
- Removal: Magma Spray and Abrade situational removal, if games were best of 3 these would be sideboard.
- Burn: Lightning Strike and Wizard's Lightning, used to the face, kill a creature, or combo piece for one of your wizards.
- Utility: Opt and Chart a Course. Opt scrys 1 and draws a card and can be used as a combat trick with Adeliz, The Cinder Wind and Ghitu Lavarunner. Chart a Course, low cost draw spell.
- Counter spells: Wizard's Retort, Essence Scatter, and Negate. 2 mana counter spells, could go up both an Essence Scatter and Negate. Sometimes double blue can be rough.
TL;DR:
Wizard's do stuff, your wizards help other wizards, you cast spells, your wizards change your spells slightly. Have fun.
