Learn more Download For WindowsWhile I do believe I was amongst the first to post a colorless matters deck (not that it matter because we are all in this together!!!), I initially chose to use it in a mono blue shell so I could use counters to stay alive and protect Ugin once he hit the board. Grim_86 gave me several good ideas on changing the shell to a mono black shell, so I checked his out and while it's quite similar to the one I have built here, it's not quite the same. Call me bias, but I believe mine is a bit more efficient. I don't want to take anything away from him though as he clearly has a mind for strategy. I view this brew as an excellent collaboration between both of us. Without further ado, enter Ugin, the Forsaken.
For the first few turns we are solely defensive. Starting on turn one, we have one drop in Bloodchiefs Thirst. This card is excellent at any phase of the game. Early game, it's a one mana removal spell, and late game it's a four mana removal spell for both creatures and planeswalkers! We also run four copies of stonecoil serpent which we typically don't cast until later in the game unless we need blockers early. That situation is rare though considering all the early removal spells we have. On turn two we run three copies of mazemind tome and three copies of feed the swarm. Mazemind tome helps us sift through our deck to find Ugin and removal should we need it. Feed the swarm does cost us life to cast, but we plan on gaining life through mazemind tome so the loss is negligible; the fact that it also removes enchantments is super helpful as some people are trying to run shrines in ranked, not to mention the other enchantments we want off the field.
On turn three we have four copies of palladium myr to help us ramp to Ugin and allows us an easy turn five forsaken monument. We also run two copies of skyscanner for the card draw as we dig for removal and Ugin.
On turn four we run three copies of Hagra Mauling, which we totally don't mind using early as a mana. We run two copies of Myriad Construction because of the way it replaces itself with 1/1 should it become the target of a spell or ability. Lastly but not least, we run four copies of solemn simulacrum, which is an excellent card. A. It helps us ramp when it enters the board, b. It works great as a blocker that we don't mind using, and c. We get to draw a card when it dies.
One turn five we run three copies of forsaken monument as a card that takes our entire deck over the top. First it gives all of our colorless creatures a +2/2 pump. Second it adds one colorless mana to any colorless mana we tap for. And third, we gain 2 life any time we cast a colorless spell, which we have plenty of. This artifact is VERY powerful.
Of course we run 4 copies of Ugin because our opponents are ready to remove it at this point. If they don't, they lose, simple as that. The biggest difference between the blue and black shell is that we don't have a way to protect Ugin with counters without blue. If our opponent runs a sorcerous spyglass, our game plan is to get out forsaken Monument and beat our opponents face in with our pumped artifact creatures.
Once again, I want to give credit to Grim_86 as a collaborating partner for this deck, which definitely has some heat to it.
Thanks for checking out my deck and my deck guide. I believe this deck is very competitive, but it's early in the new meta and still may need a tweak or two. It's getting absolutely stomped by anything that's remotely meta at gold 4, It literally loses to everything: dimir rogues, omnath, adventrures, mono red, even some janky tutelage mill
stay away from it if you want to rank up or even clear dailies
