Description

Pioneer version of my modern deck https://aetherhub.com/Deck/Public/29056 This was my first modern deck and won many LGS events and did well on mtgo. I also day 2'd my first SCG Open with this in Louisville in 2018. The only non-land downgrade from my current list is image to image.

1CMC Creatures:

image  1/1 Flyer with sacrifice to counter instant / sorcery unless opponent pays 1. Very useful and slows down opponent with having the ability to tax spells.

image  Judge's Familiar but gets bigger when you play a spirit and can tax more when it has higher power.

image Flash spirit that can pump familiar or draw cards late game

2CMC Creatures:

image  pumps wanderer and can also sacrifice to give the rest of the team indestructible. Very useful

image hasty 2/2

3CMC Creatures:

image 3/3 Flying, Vigilance, Haste American Eagle. Do not underestimate the vigilance part of this card.

image 2/3 Flash Spirit. Can counter "can't be countered" spells since it exiles them. Also can give surprise lethal by flashing in on opponent's end step or pumping wanderer on your turn.

Noncreatures:

image  the best noncreature in this deck. Can be used offensively or defensively

image  pumps the whole team. "haste" damage

image can be sent at face or to opponent's creatures / planeswalkers

Sideboard:

image  the best aggro/tempo counterspell in my opinion. Could go with image if wanting a more image ability. image is also a strong option

image  a one sided instant pyroclasm that is killer against aggro decks. I used to play image in the modern version to much success even though it hurts my team.

image  awesome graveyard hate

image  nonland interaction and a flashy flyer

image  oblivion ring but can convoke creatures. Most useful after attacking with creatures and a Rally of Wings. Other options include image and image. I had much success with Cast Out in modern

Other Builds:

UW Sephara Spirits https://aetherhub.com/Deck/Public/176848 Mostly cutting red and going harder in spirit synergy and image. Could also cut Sephara and add green for image like modern bant spirits or make it a more tempo UW spirits build. Slightly more budget friendly

image  this card is amazing in standard UW flyers and can be good here. If playing 4 Foresight's, I would cut 2 lands. Recommended other cuts for foresight are Shock or Favorable Winds. You can go down 2 Shocks for a full playset of 2 Favorable Winds.

The main reason Sphinx is in there currently is to reduce land count by 2 due to his opening hand ability and to dodge effects like Ritual of Soot. Eagle would be good but might increase 3 drops too much. If I swapped 4 Sphinx for 4 Eagle, I would likely have to add 2ish lands to the deck making it 2 Eagle for 4 Sphinx.

Seems like a pretty clear deck for Empyrean Eagle. I'm not sure you'll really consistently cast the Sphinx of Foresight so I would just switch 4 for 4 with Empyrean Eagle to have essentially 8 lords in the deck. Otherwise I like the idea. Mantis Rider seems like a pretty strong card when you have Favorable Winds and Empyrean Eagle together.
