Phyrexia: All Will Be One Updates Recap: Previews Ended, Trending Cards

Final preview day for Phyrexia: All Will be One is now over. We have seen a good majority of the set (officially) at this point, and players are already preparing for its arrival next month. Quite fewer information to relay this time, but there's a still a few juicy ones to take note. Here are the most important game-related updates known so far for Phyrexia: All Will be One from January 22nd to 25th.

Common Sphere Lands

The most recent WeeklyMTG unveiled a new cycle of common ONE lands with the designated type "sphere". This references the different layers within the plane of Phyrexia/New Phyrexia. These are five of the total nine, with the last four being rares. As you can see, their main gimmick is entering the battlefield tapped, and becoming a potential draw resource whenever the player needs to. They are primarily designed as an easy-to-access, land-based resource for Limited format games.

Familiar Faces in Different Forms

As already hinted by other cards previously leaked. a number of familiar characters in the plane of Mirrodin/New Phyrexia will return as new cards. How they would look or form will depend largely on their suggested lore and stories. But they would still have part of their effects as a signature part of their identity.

Minor Rules Change (Text Shift)

With regards to the Commander-centric card Tangleweave Armor, any text that specifies the zone/location of the Commander card has been omitted. This is to prevent a loophole that causes the X value to momentarily become 0 when the Commander is being cast (a card on the stack is not considered to be anywhere else in the game). Thus, this prevents the Tangleweave Armor token (and other similar cards in the future) from instantly dying once their target cards are casted and moved from their zones.

Affinity and Flashback are now officially Deciduous

Sometime in between the previews, Mark Rosewater has officially declared (via Twitter and Blogatog/Tumblr) the two classic abilities as "deciduous". Meaning that these abilities, whenever given space or a bit of opportunity, will always return in new sets every now and then. For the uninitiated, this comes from his Storm Scale, a 1-10 rating of an ability's likelihood of being reused in another set. Lower numbers makes them more likely to return and vice versa ("deciduous" abilities/mechanics are Storm Scale 2).

While Flashback's Storm Scale update didn't generate much reaction, quite a number of people were concerned about Affinity, especially if the condition is as simple as a generic card type. But, there are already similar effects on Standard-legal cards today (Angelic Observerimage, Argivian Phalanximage, to name a few), and are quite balanced so long as the target condition is a bit more specific. We expect that many of them will receive an errata treatment for future reprints.
