Hordemasters 2022

variancekills December 3, 2022 1 min

Hordemasters is an annual tournament held by The Horde, a Magic: The Gathering Arena amateur team composed of so-called “competitive casuals,” people who love the game and are interested in developing all aspects of their play skill, but are limited in terms of the time that they can spend doing so by other (arguably more important) responsibilities such as their professions, families, studies, etc.

Since March of 2021, the Horde has grown considerably. It has over 100 registered members on Aetherhub, with many more members in their team discord. The team remains to offer open membership; joining the discord is the only thing one needs to do in order to join the team. For those interested, here is the link to the team discord.

In the team, members share a wide range of information with each other. Among the various topics of interest that are regularly discussed are: maximizing the use of resources (gold/gems/wild cards) in order to have as much access as possible to constructed decks across formats, developing skills and understanding the meta in both limited and constructed play, and maximizing efficiency in climbing the mythic ladder and obtaining either top 1200 or top 250 spots.

Through dedication, diligence, and good fortune, members of the Horde have been able to join the MTGA Qualifier Weekend a total of 69 times since the team’s inception. Among those, members have reached Day 2 a total of 5 times. Members have also reached Day 2 of Arena Opens a total of 21 times. In terms of cash prizes won across tournaments that members join, members have accumulated over $5000 (with $500 won from the most recent Arena Open).

In celebration of these achievements and of the team’s second year, Hordemasters features a 4-round swiss tournament with a cut to top 8. It is a multiformat event, with one round each of Standard, Explorer, Alchemy, and Historic and then Standard in the top 8. The event was opened to all existing members of the team since November of 2022. There will be almost $200 in cash prizes, contributed voluntarily by the team’s many members who were able to win cash at different events this year. Coverage of the event will be conducted on the team’s Twitch channel on December 10, 2022 at 1PM EST. We warmly invite everyone to watch the coverage. There will be giveaways raffled to followers in chat.

1k gem code Raffle!

As part of the celebration, we are raffling off one 1k gem code. All you need to do to join is follow us on Twitter and retweet our celebratory video here. Afterward, post the link to the RT in the comment section of this article.

About variancekills:

Hi, I'm Mark. I've won exactly one World Magic Cup Qualifier, one Preliminary Pro Tour Qualifier, one Arena Open ($2k) one CFB Pro Showdown (April, 2021), and one Mana Traders Series (Oct, 2021) and I am looking to win more. I've played in almost every Mythic Championship Qualifier Weekend. Follow my FB page or my Twitch channel for no frills, competitive Magic. You won't see my face, but I won't hide my gameplay and deckchoice flaws. I play both MTGA and MTGO and stream most of the time when I do. I will lose often, and I will make mistakes, but I try my best to let you know when I do (and I think I will still win a lot more times than I lose).

I'm a dad and husband first, a statistician, teacher, and researcher second (I know those are 3 things but bear with me), a Magic player third, and a content creator only because I am a Magic player.

So yeah, let's play some Magic and may the shuffler be with us all.
