Learn more Download For WindowsThis deck started with a question: can I build a functional (or maybe even powerful) deck where the main gimmick is constantly discarding my own hand? Additionally, I was interested in building a mono-black deck so a second limitation was added.
Soon the deck has cards like Dark Suspicions, Idle Thoughts and Ghirapur Orrery - straight forward effects that rewarded me for holding a 0-card hand.
So, how do I get to 0? A self-discard mechanic seemed to be the most reliable way to put the strategy in my hands when it came to holding an empty hand. Somewhere along the way, I found the deck included a lot of Zombies so then it also became a Zombie-tribal deck. Okay, so now we have a mono-black, self-discard Zombie-tribal deck. Enter Bone Miser, Necromancer's Stockpile, Rotting Regisaur, etc.
After a while, the mono-black commanders just didn't have the juice for this strategy - everything felt forced and ultimately, just was not working. All this time I had been resisting the temptation of including blue, a color that had all the OTHER zombie cards and discard cards I couldn't access (i.e. Laboratory Drudge, Secrets of the Dead). I was still on a budget though and slamming a five cent Swamp and being happy about it was something worth preserving. When I found my way to Oskar, Rubbish Reclaimer I thought "what's stopping me from playing a Dimir commander with a mono-black 99?". All I had to do was include a little bit of blue land production - enough to reliably cast Oskar - and just run the rest of the deck as normal. Thing was, someone of those blue cards are just too good to pass up once you have the chance to use them, so I included a few select choices. As of writing this I have 69 black pips and 7 blue.
