Ok! So with this deck we have Zirda, the Dawnwaker
as our companion, meaning that all cards in our deck need an activated ability (including non-basic lands). As a result, we have a whole bunch of black and red creatures at our disposal, along with a few artifacts, instants and enchantments. I wanted to utilise the menace mechanic with this deck to, so cards such as Frillscare Mentor
, Labyrinth Raptor
, Blood Curdle
, Glaive of the Guildpact
and Angrath, Captain of Chaos
have been put in for this reason. Phoenix of Ash
is our superstar here though, being a flyer with haste and escape, and the ability to gain an additonal +2 power for 2 colourless and 1 red. When we have Zirda in play however, this cost is reduced to just one single red mana per activation. And if we have fliers defending? We can utilise menace tokens from Frillscare Mentor, Blood Curdle or Angrath (all creatures gain menace when he is active on the battlefield). We have +1/+1 counters available from Unexpected Fangs
, and +1/+0 counters from Heraldic Banner
(please choose red) and Glaive of the Guildpact. These are useful for using on Goblin Banneret
to help trigger mentor. Blisterspit Gremlin
is really just a gap fill. He can do (usually) unblockable damage for 1 mana without attacking. Sorin, Vengeful Bloodlord
can be switched out, but I personally like having the potential to gain life back, especially against aggro decks who hit us faster than we can get our board state together. Dreadful Apathy
could also be replaced, probably for an additional 2 Zirda, the Dawnwaker's. Kenrith, the Returned King
is a clutch card most of the time. You could change the number of these if you had them available. With Zirda out you get 5 life for 1 white mana, or for 1 red give all creatures haste and trample. Lands are also at your discretion, just be aware you need gates to utilise the Glaive.
