Description

The Original Idea

This has been my Modern pet project for more than five years. I wanted the original iteration to be good, but it never panned out that way. Mostly due to the high mana cost of a few Coldsnap cards, specifically Rimescale Dragonimage and Rimefeather Owlimage. I would combo them with Tamiyo, the Moon Sageimage for a large card draw in her second ability. As you call tell, there are none of those cards in the deck now. It seemed appropriate to update the with the addition of Damping Sphereimage from DOM. I find it has more utility than Blood Moonimage because it allows me to still operate my non-basic lands, even though it has been a staple in Modern for as long as I can remember.

I'm sure the first thing you will notice is the use of Snow-Covered and Snow lands. You're thinking "why?" right now, aren't you? As stated in the last paragraph I was trying to find a way to make use of snow permanents in a Modern build. Ultimately I only have two cards that truly take advantage of the snow-covered lands; Scrying Sheetsimage and Skredimage. With Modern Horizons I hope I'll have more snow permanents that I can actively use in this deck.

The Combo (Feature Cards)

You can theoretically win by turn four if you draw the needed cards from your opening hand. At least three land cards, perferably one Island, one Mountain and any other land. Training Grounds, Izzet Guildmage, Soulbright Flamekin and Manamorphose for your other four cards.

NOTE: Soulbright Flamekinimage isn't completely necessary here, it does however give us a mana fix if we manage to draw sorceries out of our draw steps.

The Win-Cons (Support Cards)

image image image

  • Even though Boros Reckonerimage dies to being targetted by Skredimage (If you have enough snow permanents out.) That damage is redirected to our opponent.
  • Lava Spikeimage with Izzet Guildmageimage is the true win-con. It's a pseudo-storm mechanic.

The Other Stuff (Utility Cards)

image image image image image

  • Cryptic Commandimage will mostly be used for sounterspell and card draw.
  • There are better counterspells than Dissolveimage, but the scry is a helpful filter.
  • Keranos, God of Stormsimage can give us an extra card draw or a free bolt.
  • Remandimage has card draw and is an early answer if you don't have the other two counterspells.
  • Serum Visionsimage is for card draw and filter.
