Learn more Download For WindowsI made this deck for the current FNM: Historic Brawl event on Arena. I was surprised by how quick it was able to go off and handily beat high-tier commanders like Niv-Mizzet Reborn. With the format opening up access to old lifegain staples like Leonin Vanguard, Soul Warden, and Serra Ascendant, as well as old monowhite staples such as Legion's Landing // Adanto, the First Fort, Benalish Marshall, and Settle the Wreckage, there is plenty of early game and a decent amount of control to stay close with most decks into the mid-late game. The newer lifegain cards such as Linden, the Steadfast Queen, Daxos, Blessed by the Sun, and Ajani, Strength of the Pride still find their respective spots among the deck's top performers.
If things go awry, there are a number of board wipes. Shatter the Sky, and Planar Cleansing can handle most board states, and as an added bonus, if you have either Gideon or Heliod is a creatue, neither of them will die and you you will still draw a card with Shatter the Sky. Additionally, Settle the Wreckage has the possibility to do some decent damage if your opponent unwittingly swings all in without considering the possibility of having their wreckage settled. The ultimate/-0 ability on Ajani, Strength of the Pride is also one of the board wipes I included in the deck, since the lifegain should be enough to get you to the 40 life mark needed to exile most of your opponent's non-land permanents.
Other cards that stand out to me are Elspeth Conquers Death, Lyra Dawnbringer, and Ugin, the Ineffable, which is currently a brawl staple. Also, there seems to be enough incidental enchantment use that it makes Archon of Sun's Grace a decent choice to play as a 4-mana creature. Cavalier of Dawn's interaction with Heliod make it very strong since if your opponent doesnt have anything you want to destroy, you can target him and get a free 3/3 Golem token, as well as the death trigger which can return other standout cards like Elspeth Conquers Death to your hand, which can reanimate Cavalier of dawn, which can get it back when it dies, which can then... you get the point.
One card I am not sure if it should be in the deck or not is Kinjalli's Sunwing. I like the effect of your opponents' creatures entering the battlefield tapped, but it just may not be necessary. It could possibly be replaced by another creature with a more relevant effect, such as Nyx-Fleece Ram, Respliedent Angel, or Shield Mare, or even a non-creature spell like Unbreakable Formation, History of Benalia, or even Revitalize. Honestly, there are a lot of decent spells and creatures that could fit into this deck, which really made it tough to build at first. Conversely, I do like having Tomik, Distinguished Advokist as it can shut down Nissa, Who Shakes the World and The Gitrog Monster decks.
Overall, I still don't know if I would consider this to be one of the top decks for the format, especially since it is not a format that I can really playtest enough to find out what is the top of the meta. However, it is a fun deck to play, especially when it is able to do the crazy things it tries to do. If you decide to try it out, let me know what you think.
Edit 1: Removed cards like Planar Cleansing and some others and replaced them with cards that just overall felt better and less situational. Especially since board wipes didn't really feel like they fit with what this deck was trying to do.
Edit 2: Dranith Magistrate has been banned in Brawl, as was suspected to happen, and so it has been replaced with Twinblade Paladin. Also, AetherHub, please make Historic Brawl or Friendly Brawl a format we can choose for our decks so that it doesn't always just show up as illegal.
