Description

This is an attempt to turn one of my favorite tribal decks more competitive. It still suffers from the obvious weakness swarm decks possess, which is board wipes, but by playing smartly and having more of a midrange/grindy build I feel it has tools to keep you in the game long enough to recover and snatch some wins.

So, these are the core cards to any saproling deck:

image, image, image, image, image, image.

Most swarm decks also run Song of Freyaliseimage. The ability to tap your dorks for mana, ramping into your finishers early on is devastating, not to mention the last chapter, which represents lethal in most games.

From this point on I had a decision to make; I could go with a more aggressive version by running cards like Llanowar Elvesimage, Thallid Omnivoreimage, Path of Discoveryimage, The Immortal Sunimage, to name a few, or I could go with a more midrange/control version, which was what I decided to do as explained above.

From the various golgari tools I had available I went with the following and I'll explain why:

Vicious Offeringimage is a versatile choice of spot removal. You're never upset using it against early threats and it also deals with beefy creatures pretty well.

I went with Ravenous Chupacabraimage instead of a card like Vraska's Contemptimage because it adds a body to the board that you can sacrifice with your Vicious Offeringimage and also bring back with Find // Finalityimage.

Speaking of Find // Finalityimage, it wasn't originally in the deck, but after watching this video: Black/Green Golgari Saproling Fungus Tribal - MTG Arena Gameplay and Guide by CovertGo Blue (kudos for him and AichelCZ YT) I decided to include a few copies. This card allows me to restock after a board wipe or removal of key creatures, as well as surprise my opponent clearing the board myself and draining his/her hit points when paired with Slimefoot, the Stowawayimage. I must confess that the later doesn't come up too often, but the "Find" part of the card is good enough.

I also included one lonely copy of Twilight Prophetimage because I feel the card's ability is very strong. Acquiring the city's blessing is not that hard for this deck and if not answered soon, it can generate a lot of value.

Vivien Reidimage is also here for card advantage. The +1 ability allows you to essentially draw an extra card every turn. The -3 ability is also extremelly useful and her ultimate is synergetic with the deck.

Lands are pretty straightforward; Overgrown Tombimage and Woodland Cemeteryimage to avoid too much mana of one color and none of the other, and a fairly even distribution of Swampimage and Forestimage.

For the sideboard I decided to include cards that could turn the deck more aggressive for when I don't need this much removal and disruptive cards against the various archetypes out there.

You'll want to include Llanowar Elvesimage against decks that won't kill it instantly. It's very disheartening when an opponent shocks your elves on turn one.

Duressimage is for removing counterspells and boardwipes from control decks. Also, most of the times you'll want to check your opponent's hand before dropping your Tendershoot Dryadimage, so it doesn't die from a removal spell or gets countered.

Fungal Infectionimage is great against those decks that run one-toughness creatures like our very own Llanowar Elvesimage, Mist-Cloaked Heraldimage, Runaway Steam-Kinimage, among others.

Assassin's Trophyimage is a very versatile removal spell that you can even run in the main deck. I mainly use it when the opponent runs too many enchantments or planeswalkers.

Crushing Canopyimage is pretty self explanatory.

If you read this much, then you're probably interested in the saproling archetype. I highly encourage your curiosity and hope you get the deck for a spin, it's fun. Thank you for reading!

P.S. 1 - I would love to have your feedback on the list. If you have any advice or want to share your experience with the deck, please post a reply. I'll be happy to read.

P.S. 2 - English isn't my native language, so I'm sorry if you find a mistake here and there.
