Description

This is a budget deck upgrade for Fireworks, the Izzet or Prismari (U/R) Starter deck on MTG Arena unlocked through the Color Challenge.

This Deck Upgrade costs: 1 Common WC's || 12 Uncommon WC's || 0 Rare & Mythic WC's
All other cards in the deck, including the rares and mythics, are obtained for free from the other Arena Starter Decks.

This deck likes to pretend it has two main themes (Wizards and Big Spells), but it really only has one. The big spell package is entirely reliant on Rare cards, and having a few one-ofs is not enough support. So we're going to focus on the good Wizards we have access to and building the rest of the deck to support them.

WIZARDS

image image image

These are our 3 main Wizards. Aegar, the Freezing Flameimage is a decent body and card draw engine in our deck that enables both our giant and wizard synergies. We have a lot of cheap ways to remove our opponents' stuff and access to some counterspells to protect our Aegar to keep the engine going. Umara Mysticimage is a little slow to get going, but once we get it to stick on the board it can become a formidable threat in the air for our opponents. As far as Wizard decks go, this is one of the better ones we have access to in this slot. Basalt Ravagerimage is our last Wizard and gives us a decent pay-off for having some wizards on board. Our deck is going to play like a control/midrange deck that slowly tries to gain a foothold on the board before turning on the aggression. Ravager is a flexible threat that can remove an opponent's blocker or go straight for pressuring their life total.

SPELLS

image image image image image

We have a lot of cheap spells to take advantage of our Umara Mystic's pump ability and also to slowly advance our board state while having access to counterplay via counterspells or instant speed removal. Glimpse the Cosmosimage is a good card advantage spell that can be replayed for a blue mana as long as we have a Giant on the battlefield. It pairs well with our Giant Wizards and having the ability to play it twice can get our Mystics pretty large. Dragon's Fireimage is our removal spell of choice. It's instant speed deal 3 damage which is a solid rate, and has the upside of being able to deal more damage if we control or reveal a dragon - in our case, Iymrith, Desert Doomimage and Goldspan Dragonimage. Expressive Iterationimage is one of the best card advantage spells in the game so we bumped ours up to 4 copies. Saw It Comingimage gives us a lot of flexibility in our deck. Like I mentioned before we want to slowly advance our board state before getting really aggressive once we have control of the game, and this card is the main way that we accomplish that. Crush the Weakimage is a surprisingly powerful effect for our gameplan. Normally our deck would be very susceptible to aggro decks, but Crush the Weak gives us some solid counterplay against them so that we don't get overwhelmed. It also doesn't kill our Aegar and Umara Mystic, so we can wipe mono white's board even while we have some creatures of our own in play.

POTENTIAL UPGRADES

It should be noted that there is no tier Wizards deck in Standard at the moment. The most popular Izzet deck at the moment is Izzet Dragons, which this deck upgrades nicely into. However, if you enjoy the Wizard theme and would like to explore it more fully upgraded, here are some considerations:

CONCLUSION

I hope you enjoy this deck and that it serves you well. There's a deck tech video on youtube attached to this guide and I stream on Twitch here so don't hesitate to reach out :) I'd love to hear your experience with the deck. Good luck and have fun!
