Learn more Download For WindowsSoulflayer - The main wincon in the deck.
Uses Delve mechanic to exile cards from graveyard to pay for 1 colorless mana in its casting cost.
You will always need, at minimum: 2 black mana and 4 cards in the graveyard to play this using Delve.
You can also cast this for any combination of 2+ mana and exiled graveyard cards.
For each creature exiled while paying Soulflayer's casting cost, Soulflayer will gain any of the following attributes that the exiled creature has: Flying, First Strike, Double Strike, Deathtouch, Haste, Vigilance, Hexproof, Indestructible, Lifelink, Reach, Trample
My rankings of attributes:
S Tier - Flying, Double Strike, Indestructible, Hexproof
A Tier - Vigilance, Trample, Haste, Lifelink
B Tier - First Strike, Reach
Any combo of 3 or more from the S Tier will likely prove lethal
Indestructible, Hexproof are notable as the attributes which are the strongest counter to removal
Double Strike and Lifelink are a deadly combo.
Flying and Haste makes turn 3 Soulflayer almost guaranteed to connect.
Lotleth Troll - Creature discard outlet.
Gets a decent body after second discard
Only way to get non playable creatures out of hand outside of Geier Reach Sanitarium
Has Regeneration for one black mana
Note: This will not counter sacrifice nor exile effects though, sadly.
Zetalpa, Primal Dawn - Best Discard Creature.
Can turn on a nearly complete Soulflayer with 1 other creature.
Hands down the best card to discard and is one of the signature cards in the deck.
Opponents who are smart will know when Zetalpa is discarded that Soulflayer is likely.
This may cause some opponents to adjust harshly (hate) on Game 2 and 3 against Soulflayer:
Rest in Peace, Grafdigger's Cage and Tormod's Crypt are all likely to be seen.
Hard counters with Abrupt Decay and Golgari Charm
Subbing in for the Become Immense and Languish spots in the main deck.
Sunblade Angel and Gifted Aetherborn - Lifelink, Deathtoch
These two both bring Lifelink to the Soulflayer party.
Sunblade Angel also carries Flying and Vigilance for redundancy.
Gifted Aetherborn is notable for also bringing Deathtouch.
(Which is only found on Nightveil Predator as well.)
Gurmag Swiftwing and Samut, Voice of Dissent - Haste
Both bring Haste.
Gurmag also brings Flying, providing redundancy
While Samut brings Vigilance and Double Strike, providing further redundancy
Both Provide valuable attributes, each giving redundancy for their respective attributes
Nightveil Predator uniquely has the only Hexproof attribute in the deck
Oketra is primarily a backup for Zetalpa not showing early enough
Mausoleum Secrets works well late game for fetching up any black card needed, helpful for bridging dead games
Grisly Salvage is the ideal Turn 2 or 3, providing a high chance of filling the graveyard and bringing an in-hand Soulflayer online by T3 or T4
Commune with the Gods gives a good 5-8 copy of Grisly Salvage, since we mostly care about the graveyard filling and creature fetching aspects.
I've found that 2 x Languish and 1 x The Elderspell get the best bang for my buck in main-deck 60.
I've been messing with Become Immense in the The Elderspell slot mainboard, and it has caused a win-more kind of scenario in most games that it resolves. Feel free to take back your third removal slot for other cards.
Tinkering with the Become Immense slot will give you the third removal slot for any of the alternative cards like The Elderspell.
Rest in Peace, Tormod's Crypt and Grafdigger's Cage all die to Golgari Charm and Abrupt Decay.
(These are some of the most common ways to bring this deck to its demise if they go left unanswered)
