Control

This is an update to my previous list here which now seems to be performing strictly better. Here's the youtube deck guide for the old list. The deck plays mostly the same despite substitutions.

Izzet the new mono U tempo?

The goal of tempo is obviously to control the pace of the game, and although we lost a lot of the greatest cards in rotation from mono blue tempo, we've gained a few others which might make this kind of strategy viable again.

We have fast, hard hitting cards which can become a threat if not dealth with like Lightning Stormkinimage, Brazen Borrowerimage and Brineborn Cutthroatimage, while also running way too much control, including Ionizeimage which also allows us to inflict hurt on their life total. Spectral Sailorimage, Thassa's Interventionimage, Winged Wordsimage, Optimage and the scry trigger on Mischievous Chimeraimage helps us to keep up with card advantage and find the things we need to control the pace of the game.

It seems pretty good in my playtesting so far. Mishievous Chimera really surprised me - I thought no way it would fit in a Tier 1 or even Tier 2 deck, but this might be changing my mind.

The thing about Chimera is (much like an actual Chimera) it's a mashup of a lot of different things. On it's face, it seems not quite good enough to be aggro and not quite good enough to fit into a flash, control, or spells pay-off deck. However, when you are trying to do all of those things in the same deck, and when you also happen to have a flying subtheme, it turns out to be pretty dang good.

Its scry trigger kind of sort of does what Curious Obsessionimage used to do in mono blue tempo.

Aggro sub-theme?

A lot of these cards are fast, either with flash or with haste to allow them to inflict hurt shortly after they come down, along with 4 Bonecrusher Giantimage that can either serve as control, or could go face, or could become a creature threat. With the correct sideboard strategy, it is possible to sideboard out some of the control for additional aggro for a surprise shift in strategy on game 2.

Sibeboard

Shoutouts to MaxBowArrow on reddit for the great sideboarding suggestions. This sideboard continues with the tempo theme, but you could just as easily play sideboards which can allow a surprising shift in strategy on game 2 by subbing out control for aggro with Anax, Hardened in the Forgeimage, Shockimage, or Robber of the Richimage; or you could also have a suprise midrange deck with cards like Embercleaveimage, Gadwick, the Wizenedimage, or Niv-Mizzet, Parunimage on the top end.

Suggestions for improvements are always greatly appreciated :)

No problem, thanks for the feedback! I'm really divided on having any copies at all of Lightning Stormkin. Nadir Kraken almost makes more sense for tempo because it will grow large over time (and wide), but also much more important to protect it, so it's hard to cast at 3 in a tempo deck. Pteramander also has the benefit of potentially growing larger later in the game and becoming a threat, but doesn't apply as much pressure until then. I just wish there was a good flash creature alternative

Ok. I now also tested this version of the deck and its way better. The first version felt like a bad version of mono blue, but this one seems way more refined. It´s biggest strenght is that it has a clear advantage against any deck that rather wants to develope their own board than to interact your board state. The card i would want to cut in the future would be 1 Sailor and the Lightning Stormkin, but right now they seem to work. Thanks for brewing!
