Izzet Tempo?
This deck is designed to beat control lists. It is weak to aggro lists and has no answer for decks that go wide. The creatures can also be outvalued. However, against control, this list is capable of blanking removal and planeswalkers very cheaply. This deck is a.) meta dependent and b.) Cheap! (in paper and mtgo, in arena it does contain 16 rares, but half are in the mana base)
This deck's play style is similar to Delver in Modern or Legacy (in the same way that Aetherflux Reservoir is storm in the current standard format).
The Creature Package:
4x Siren Stormtamer- This card is an evasive 1/1 for 1 with upside in protecting more valuable threats (guttersnipe or creatures enchanted with a Curious Obsession) and nullifying Settle the Wreckage.
4x Soul-Scar Mage- A 1/2 Prowess for 1 that makes removal better is straight value! It also makes blocks difficult for the opponent as spells can pump SSM while simultaneously shrinking their blockers.
4x Warkite Marauder- This card hasn't found a home in the current Standard decks, but the raw power level (something we are banking on in this list) is through the roof! It turns any of our Shocks, Lightning Strikes, or Abrades (post SB) into unconditional 1 and 2 mana removal spells for any creatures in our opponent's decks. The flying on Warkite Marauder is also more evasive than on other creatures as it can remove a flyer from blocking it each turn, making it a strong candidate for Curious Obsession.
3x Spellweaver Eternal- Spellweaver Eternal is here solely to push damage. It doesn't contribute to the protection or removal package like the 3 creatures listed above, but since our deck is very low to the ground, the deck needs ways to push extra damage through the early stages of the midgame.
3x Guttersnipe- Like Spellweaver Eternal, Guttersnipe pushes damage through, and the wording of "each opponent" lets the damage slide past Shalai's as upside. If this list was more aggro and wizard tribal centric, this spot would probably be better served by Adeliz, but Guttersnipe makes our 1 and 2 mana instants or sorceries provide even more value.
4x Riddleform- Although not technically a creature, its a 3/3 flyer for 2 mana that can fix top decks in the mid to late game. Riddleform's sheer power level gives it the nod in this list, although it can be better utilized in more proactive strategies that play burn spells before attacks.
Protection Package-
4x Siren Stormtamer- SEE ABOVE
4x Spell Pierce- Izzet Tempo? runs low to the ground and often requires leaving mana up each turn to deal with our opponent's threats. Spell Pierce gets the nod over Negate in the mainboard by allowing us to hold it up while still casting a 1 drop on turn 2 or potentially a 2 drop on turn 3. With the pace this deck attempts to run at, Control lists will often be forced to tap out to cast board wipes and Planeswalkers, allowing Spell Pierce to remain a relevant protection spell much later into the game in this deck than other lists would allow.
2x Dive Down- Standard fare for protecting our creatures from removal spells, but can also double as combat tricks to pump our blockers, trigger prowess, or allow Riddleform to activate and turn into a creature. Very flex!
Removal Package-
4x Soul-Scar Mage- SEE ABOVE
4x Warkite Marauder- SEE ABOVE
4x Shock/Lightning Strike- Nothing interesting to talk about. Works well as removal, and even moreso with our creature package, can go face to close games, and triggers prowess or Riddleform.
Draw Package
4x Curious Obsession- Makes our small creatures bigger, and the card draw can keep us ahead to answering boardstates. Usually best to play on a flyer.
Lands-
Standard fare, par for the course. 7x Island, 5x Mountain, 4x Spirebluff Canal, 4x Sulfur Falls. Running both 1 drops in red and blue makes the mana base punishing at times. I can't recommend this list without the full 8 rare lands, and without more energy activators, and with so many colored mana requirements, Aether Hub is NOT a decent substitution.
Sideboard:
2x Merfolk Trickster- A 2 drop we can play on turn 2 while leaving up removal and protection spells because of flash. Also doesn't die to chainwhirler! Is UU to cast though...so very situational.
2 Viashino Pyromancer- More damage for racing control lists.
2 Dive Downs- For reasons mentioned above.
2 Abrade- Solid 3 damage or artifact removal.
4 Negates- To help counter more relevant spells vs control
3x Essence Scatter- Chainwhirler is a thing....you've been warned!
