May 1st changelog:

Out:

  • 2x Negate
  • 2x Disdainful Stroke
  • 3x Rip Apart
  • 2x Saw It Coming
  • 3x Expressive Iteration
  • 2x Doomskar (Sideboard)
  • 1x Redcap Melee (Sideboard)

Reasoning: Netate, Disdainful, Saw it Coming - the deck was a bit heavy on counterspells, and lacked threats, making it weak to a lucky mill from Rogues, with their heavy removal suite. Rip Apart and Expressive Iteration were both too slow, and while the removal was welcome, there were few creatures Rip Apart could take that Bonecrusher couldn't; Expressive is a great card, but also a bit too slow. For the sideboard, Doomskar was redundant w/ Draconic Intervention, and three Redcaps felt one too many, especially now that we have mainboard removal in Bonecrusher.

In:

  • 2x Mystical Dispute
  • 4x Elite Spellbinder
  • 3x Brazen Borrower
  • 4x Bonecrusher Giant
  • 1x Elspeth Conquers Death (Sideboard)
  • 2x Rip Apart (Sideboard)

Reasoning: Mystical Dispute is a 1-mana counterspell against blue spells, letting us cast it off of a galazeth's treasure. Elite Spellbinder is a MASSIVE tempo tool, as well as a removal magnet, making it very powerful for us. Its 3 power also makes it a good enough blocker. Brazen and Bonecrusher are kind of self-explanatory - great tempo tools with excellent versatility.

Old write-up:

This is an evolution of my previous brew. I took the deck in a more tempo-y direction, dropping the Magda combo in favor of a more value-based, consistent approach. I also added white to the deck, allowing us to run cards such as Rip Apartimage, Glass Casketimage and one copy of Emeria's Callimage.

Rip Apart is an absurdly flexible card that will be incredibly relevant in the meta to come. Sadly, it being a sorcery stops it from protecting us from an Embercleaveimage, but we have Prismari Command for that. Speaking of, Prismari Command is also pretty flexible, dealing with small creatures and looting for two, or generating a treasure for later use w/ either Galazeth or Goldspan. Then there's the izzet tempo counterspell package, except we can replace the Negates with Test of Talentsimage, depending if the meta shifts towards a more instant/sorcery heavy one, as it can drain decks of some of their finishers, like Sultai Ultimatum or Jeskai Cycling. It also proves to be very powerful in mirror matches, by completely removing the opponent's Magma Opus or counterspells. Thanks to Galazeth, we don't have to lose our treasures, so Goldspan generates even more advantage than before.

We run four copies of Magma Opus. While we could theoretically run Inspiring Ultimatum, Magma has two advantages over it: the instant speed, letting us cast it on an opponent's upkeep and disabling two of their lands/creatures, and the ability to discard one in order to generate a treasure, enabling a faster Galazeth/Goldspan drop.

Sideboard: We run two Draconic Interventionimages to control the board better - their exile effect gets around death triggers which are pretty relevant for both Witherbloom and Silverquill, as well as any Lurrus list. Redcap Meleeimage is great removal vs monoG lists - the only thing it doesn't hit is Lovestruck Beast - and thanks to our treasure generation, the land sac is mitigated. Soul-Guide Lanternimage is our graveyard hate. Ox of Agonasimage lets us counter rogue mill decks, and Mystical Disputeimage helps vs them as well. Elspeth Conquers Deathimage is great when handling bigger threats that the traditional red removal is unable to, while Doomskarimage gives us more options when it comes to handling go-wide strategies.
