I'm very excited about this deck. It's VERY fast, resilient, and otherwise tough to deal with because of the recurability of virtually everything in the deck. This deck is built extremely low to the ground to accommodate Lurrus, but has the gas to smoke down midrange decks as well. Simply put, this deck has the juice to get you to mythic rank relatively quick. Something I didn't realize until after putting the deck together, for you Arena players, this deck requires zero mythic rare wild cards, and if you are a paper MTG player, this deck can be built on a sub $50 budget at the time of me writing this. I challenge anyone to build a better deck on a tighter budget; show me what you've got!
On turn one we have a multitude of one drops; of the most important, being part of the deck's namesake, Speaker of the Heavens and archfiend's vessel both have lifelink to help us stabilize, and both help us get much bigger creatures with evasion on the board, but they are not necessarily the cards we want to lead with.
When it comes to starting hand potential this deck exhibits a ton of variance. So I want to talk about a few different hands and how I would play them.
Ideally we play hateful eidolon first if we have dead weight or mire's grasp in our opening hand as this removal/ card draw engine will make mono red and UW aggro decks scoop, and if they don't it's because they are in awe of how efficient your deck is, and they want to see it play out to go build their own version. I've built more than one deck around this combo, but this one may be the best yet.
If we don't have dead weight or mire's grasp in hand for a turn two play, we are better off leading with archfiend's vessel, alseid, or selfless savior (in that order) as we typically want our most expendable creatures on the board first to draw our opponents removal. Alseid and selfless savior are ideally used to protect Lurrus, as they can be looped to protect Lurrus indefinately.
If at all possible, when our opponent attempts to remove our creatures we will use village rites to sacrifice our own creature to draw cards, and to waste our opponents removal. We typically only want to use village rites on archfiend's vessel, an enchanted eidolon, Lurrus, or Vito; archfiend's vessel because we want it in the yard anyway and we may as well get some cards out of it, an enchanted eidolon because it will really help us refill our hand on top of the cards we already are going to get to draw, and especially on Lurrus or Vito because we have no way of bringing them back so we'll be needing to dig for new ones on the draw.
As for our two drops we run a copy of Daxos and a few copies of impassioned orator to combo with speaker of the heavens and Vito. We also run a copy of tymaret to keep our opponent from escaping Uro and Kroxa. Tymaret's graveyard hate also combos really well with Vito and speaker. These cards are great plays, but once again, if we have hateful eidolon down, we really want to be playing dead weight or mire's grasp here.
For turn three we run four copies of Lurrus which is one of the more powerful creatures in standard. Lurrus' ability can be used with exceptional flexibility; we can bring back Alseid and selfless savior to protect him from removal and bounce, or we can bring back dead weight and mire's grasp to remove more of our opponents creatures (hopefully while we have hateful eidolon on the field so we can draw some more cards). We do however want to hold onto Lurrus if we have a Demonic embrace to play. The reason for this is to draw your opponents removal on a creature we can bring back with Lurrus, and with all the lifegain and card draw in the deck, our demonic embrace is essentially just as easy to bring back. So while our opponent thought they were going to two for one us, they actually just wasted removal and lost a bit of card advantage.
As far as which cards we prioritize to enchant with demonic embrace, I'm still slightly split. Almost every card in this deck has lifelink to help combo off speaker of the heavens and Vito. That being said, I like archfiend's vessel as my first target (because we don't care that much if it gets removed), followed by hateful eidolon (because we don't lose card advantage if it gets removed), and while we'd rather not put demonic embrace on selfless savior or Alseid, we can if we don't have other creatures to do so with. It is very cool to use demonic embrace on speaker of the heavens because often we can attack without tapping (vigilance), get to 27 life, and then tap to create a 4/4 angel; this move is high risk high reward, but feels oh so good when it pans out.
We typically want to wait until turn four to play Lurrus. Ideally we slam Lurrus and immediately use his ability to bring back archfiend's vessel, as this particular play puts tons of pressure on our opponent. Personally, I don't like to play Lurrus unless I can combo something with him; whether that be bringing a 5/5 flying demon into play, or casting more removal, either way, I want it to drastically affect board state.
With this deck I am regularly able to get my life total to 27 and begin churning out 4/4 flyers. The only real weakness to this deck I've encountered is the the same card that ruins everyone's day; Ugin.
Thanks for checking out my deck and my deck guide. I believe this deck is very competitive in BO1, and if you like it, check out my other decks as a truly believe I have something for everyone. If I don't have something that fits your playstyle challenge me to create something for you. If there is a card, cards, or general deck theme you'd like to see in action, please do not hesitate to ask me, as I'd love to brew it up for you. I'm super excited to bring y'all some fresh brews with the new set release right around the corner. Thank you all for all the support I've received since I began posting decks, and know that I'm not going anywhere. Of course, as always, good luck my friends!
