Mill has been one of my favorite archetypes for a long long time. However, i never really saw a fairly competitive deck and noticed that most consider it a weak strategy. Well, i decided that i would push my own version through ranked to see how it stacked up. My previous attempts in Arena were serviceable, but not quite competition ready, but the release of War has allowed me to create a pretty fun control shell mill that maintains a competitive winrate (easily above 50%). Hope you enjoy
This deck requires a lot of patience and proper timing, you will run an empty board often. Most importantly, you will benefit greatly from knowing your opponent and having an understanding of the meta. Everything is timing and proper removal. You must be able to pull off low life total recoveries occasionally and these require a well planned sequence of drops.
Your main win condition is obviously to deck your opponent using Psychic Corrosion. If the tides turn or some trashcan is running Gaea's Blessing, you will have to turn to self mill with Jace, Wielder of Mysteries. Hopefully that comes when your library is low. Your main opposition is fast aggro and Dimir hand hate, everything else is just good piloting.
Seriously though if you are running Gaea's as a single copy you are a terrible person, also Wizards ,why is there an "if you play this archetype you lose" card anyway? where's my "if you look at my hand i reset the game and maintain board presence" card? Anyways...
Wall of Lost Thoughts will be one of your early and only creature cards. The wall keeps early aggro at bay and also begins the mill process. A good strategy is to look at their graveyard and judge what they are playing right off the bat.
Revitalize comes in handy for early card draw and also to slow early aggro. If you can afford to wait, it is nice to double mill with Psychic Corrosion. All of your card draw is pretty much use as needed and preferably when adding mill. The exception to this rule is Finale of Revelation. While this card can be used for an early hand fix, it is really much better as a mid game finisher. 12 mana on a single drop with Corrosion will mill 20 of their cards and reset your library and mana base. 7 mana with 2 Corrosion on board will fill your hand and also mill 20 cards. It is very powerful, use it wisely.
Dovin's Acuity plus Revitalize, provides a life gain loop and plenty of extra mill per turn. Use this to get the early game ball rolling.
Your planeswalkers are basically a win faster card, all three on board is almost certainly a win. Use Teferi's Time Twist when they are threatened to protect them and also reset their loyalty after using their removal.
Teferi's Time Twist can also be used to blink a Deputy of Detention just before a Cleansing Nova. This can also be used to push a win with your Wall of Lost Thoughts. Blink it and mill those last cards. Teferi, Time Raveler also does this well. In fact returning your own creatures in general is better than returning theirs. Time Wipe is a prime example of the type of play required to pilot this deck effectively.
Memorial to Genius is a late game fallback. Sacrifice it to remove those final cards.
That should be enough to get you started enjoying mill. Remember, have fun and induce rage.
