Arena Standard - Mono Red Aggro v2 (WOE, Oct 2023)

Aggro

Introduction

This is a quite well-rounded mono red aggro deck with a mana curve ending at 3 mana. It uses some cards from Wilds of Eldraine, such as Goddric, Cloaked Revelerimage and Charming Scoundrelimage to add more punch to the deck. The good thing about the deck is that you will never need 4 mana for anything (except for playing two or more cards) and, thus, if you get a 3-land mana screw, you'll probably do just fine. Also, having all your instant and sorcery spells cost 3 mana or less is great with Bloodthirsty Adversaryimage, because it can cast any such spell from your graveyard, when you have 5 mana available.

The deck also adheres to the principle of not putting more than 3 legendary permanents of the same name to the deck. This is to decrease the chance that you cannot play cards from your hand, because another copy of the same legendary permanent is already in play. Therefore, there are 3 copies of Feldon, Ronom Excavatorimage, 3 copies of Goddric, Cloaked Revelerimage, and 3 copies of Squee, Dubious Monarchimage in the deck.

The idea of the deck is the same as with most aggro decks: to deal 20 damage to the opponent as fast as possible and win the game before the opponent does. With a good draw, this deck can win the game on turn 4. Some other mono red deck builds that employ Monstrous Rageimage can end the game on turn 3, but that relies on the opponent having absolutely no interaction in hand and you drawing an absolutely great hand of 7 cards (and also 2 exactly right cards on turns 2 and 3). And if the opponent has creature removal in their hand, you may lose 2 cards for 1 of theirs.

Format

  • The deck is for the Standard format, as of September 2023, with Wilds of Eldraine being the last legal set.
  • The deck should perform well in both Bo1 and Bo3 matches.
  • The deck is suitable for quickly grinding a large number of wins in the Arena ladder.

Strategy

Goddric, Cloaked Reveler

image

Goddric requires 2 non-land permanents to enter the battlefield in the same turn to trigger his celebration ability. You can achieve this in a few ways:

  • Play Goddric in the same turn as Kumano Faces Kakkazan // Etching of Kumanoimage flips.
  • Play Squee, Dubious Monarchimage and attack with it when Goddric is in play. Squee and a token entering the battlefield count as two permanents.
  • Play Charming Scoundrelimage and attach Wicked Role to a creature while Goddric is in play. These will count as two permanents, because Wicked Role is a token aura enchantment.
  • Channel Sokenzan, Crucible of Defianceimage when Goddric is in play. The nice thing is that channeling Sokenzan costs only 3 mana when Goddric is in play, and therefore this action also fulfills the principle of everything costing 3 mana or less in the deck.
  • Play any two non-land permanents normally.

Squee, Dubious Monarch

image

Squee is an important combo card in the deck while also being a great card by itself. If left unchecked, Squee and its tokens hit 3 damage on the turn they enter the battlefield and the damage grows up by one each turn as Squee generates a new token every attack. Squee tokens are also good protection against Liliana of the Veilimage and similar cards. Squee tokens also help Goddric's celebration ability to trigger and they can help to generate enough attackers to return a Phoenix Chickimage back to the battlefield from the graveyard.

Sideboarding

All sideboard cards cost 3 mana or less, which somewhat restricts what cards you can put in there. However, there are plenty of good sideboard cards that cost 3 mana or less. I tried to pick cards that are mana efficient and particularly good against some decks, so that the overall power level of the deck increases rather than decreases after sideboarding.

When you do sideboarding, please also pay attention to the mana curve. It's best if you can maintain a good mana curve after sideboarding, so that you do not include too many high mana value cards while removing many cheap cards.
