I placed 4th at a local 1k event with this list. Proof here: https://www.mtgtop8.com/event?e=24362&d=370164&f=PI

19 players, went 4-1 in the Swiss and 1-1 in the top 8. The two games I lost were to the same UW control deck that was played by 3 different people (they were on a team, and there was at least 1 other UW control deck, all of which made top8. Math is 4/8 in the top 8 as UW control. Bleh.)

Game 1: Mono G ramp. G1 he ramped into bigass creatures and a Nissa while I struggled to hold ground. Next 2 games I played a lot of solid removal and interaction and cleared the path to victory as we do.

Game 2: Red pile. No idea what this guy was running, but it wasn't good. He was playing mono red but barely played any removal. He played a Boros reckoner? And I just ignored it, made dudes big, double strike, and gods willing for the win.

Game 3: UW control. Nothing too insightful to share here. They answered my stuff in ways I was not equip to answer in turn. Games went long and I was not able to get threats to stick or get big.

Game 4: Mono Blue Devotion. Had all the 1 drops early and was able to mostly play around the disruption or break even somewhat through prowess.

Game 5: Niv Fires. Multiple Casualties of War put in some WORK though I later goofed and only held up 1 Mana with a Boros Charm in hand. Fun deck to play against, but I had a ton of protection at just the right time. Only dropped the 1 game because they Krasis gained 3 life when I had lethal with Boros charm in hand.

Game 6: Grixis. Thoughtseize is legit but luckily I had good hands with multiples of spells and creatures. My cards lined up extremely well against his so I was able to protect, deploy, and pump at the right times.

Game 7: UW control. I came really really close both of these games. Boros Charm put in work but ultimately I didn't go fast enough and they were able to answer most of what I could put forth

Notable changes I've made since (updated link here: https://aetherhub.com/Deck/Public/218625)

  • Cut all copies of Gird - Most of the time, any other pump spell is better because you get some added benefit other than just more +1/+1 counters. When your creatures get bounced, at least you will have gained that temporary benefit of scrying, haste, double strike, whatever. Further reading on Gird in Feather: https://old.reddit.com/r/PioneerMTG/comments/ev60xx/boros_feather_and_gird_for_battle/
  • 4th copy of Boros Charm back in the sideboard - this card puts in the work and I always wished I could bring in during this tourney. It's flexible in all the right ways.
  • 2x Alseid - An investment upfront protection spell that gets around T3feri and happens to be 1/1 lifelink creature!
  • Chandra Acolyte of Flame in the SB - Gideon BB is often also a creature that attacks, which actually makes him weaker in some matchups (specifically i'm thinking UW control where Azorius Charm and Blessed Alliance hurt real bad). In a pinch, we can also pump an elemental. Also in a pinch, we can pay the full price to flashback a spell -- similar to Dreadhorde Arcanist.
