Angel tribal with Nethroi as commander. Say what?! Well...
I had a more conventional Nethroi self-mill deck, but kept finding that either I drew my board wipes and won or I didn't draw them and lost. I tried pushing the deck to ramp faster, but then wound up with too few creatures in the graveyard.
Next I tried moving in a life gain direction with clerics and Witherbloom stuff. That one worked out better. I added a few lifelinking angels, then it hit me that angels are valid for mutate and they're usually high priority targets for the opponent, so on paper they'd often end up in the graveyard for Nethroi to bring back later.
Does it work in practice? Kind of, but basically it's just life gain synergies and Abzan goodstuff. I almost never mutate Nethroi and, if I even cast Nethroi at all, it's usually to wall attackers with deathtouch or just have have more lifelink on the board. Still, this is the best commander in MTG Arena for what I'm doing with the other 99 cards--other than maybe Kyodai to protect Baneslayer Angel and open up Lightning Helix or some other cards, but I don't have a Kyodai.
