Combo: Ascend from Avernus is a 5 mana win button in this deck, but the combo is technically using Dina, Soul Steeper
and ETB healers like Impassioned Orator
, Lunarch Veteran // Luminous Phantom
, and Prosperous Innkeeper
to DOS your opponent with pings.
Avernus: Notice that all creatures cost 2 or less. This means that when you cast Avernus for X=2, every creature in your graveyard comes back. If, say, 1 Dina, and 5 ETB healers come back, you'll be doing 25 damage to your opponent for a 5 mana spell. Bala Ged Recovery
helps us find an Avernus.
Graveyard: We try to make the best of what self-mill is available in Alchemy, attempting to lean on 2-cost creatures for mill, as they will also come back with avernus to increase ETB healing. Circle of the Land Druid
, and Undead Butler
are our best options, but we also include Roots of Wisdom
even though it's not a creature, as it can help with land smoothing.
Weaknesses:
- Graveyard Hate / Exile: You lose; just concede and grab a new game.
- Counterspells: If against control, you might want to slow-play your hand to gaurd against sweepers, until you have Avernus and 5 mana, then play a wide board to bait a sweep in hopes they don't have the mana to counter your next turn.
- Instant-Speed Removal: Hopefully your constant stream of pseudo threats will eat all thier instant speed removal before you play Avernus. If not, then you'll have to wait until they are tapped-out.
- Aggro: This deck can often out-heal mono-red aggro, but you might want to cast an early(non-winning) Avernus just to ensure that you do. Most other aggro in the format have flying and/or trample, so you just have to hope they don't draw perfect and you do.
