Searching for the True Mishra Meld Deck
The reintroduction of the Meld ability to The Brothers’ War was certainly interesting from a deck-building perspective. But while Urza, Planeswalker, and Titania, Gaea Incarnate proved to be just a tiny bit easier to Meld consistently with a good build-around, Mishra, Lost to Phyrexia seem to have defaulted out of the race as the least playable Meld card of the three.
To be fair, there were a lot of Rakdos and even some Grixis decks that featured Mishra, Claimed by Gix and Phyrexian Dragon Engine over the past month. The thing is, these decks mostly centered around the same Midrange aggro build with the two cards just directly added. Mishra Meld on its own simply wasn’t that viable. At times, not even the individual components proved to be synergistic with the entire build.
So are dedicated Mishra Meld decks truly “lost” then? Not quite. We dug out a few ideas from various sources that we think should give the best chance at either using the meld components as effective as possible, or bypassing the limitations of Mishra, Lost to Phyrexia.
Rakdos Mishra’s Aggro
While Sloth’s overall build is still generally the same standard Rakdos aggro build, it works around Mishra, Claimed by Gix itself by taking advantage of its life drain ability. Not necessarily the most consistent Melder, especially since the deck only has two copies of Mishra, Claimed by Gix. But at least the strategic priority is directed at the individual components’ abilities themselves (instead of being treated as either a last resort or a fancy finisher).

Rakdos Sacrifice Standard
Average Gamer’s variant uses the alternate strategy of generating tokens via Oni-Cult Anvil. This then functions as the primary life drainers whenever Mishra, Claimed by Gix is in play. Mechanized Warfare is also added to the mix, putting even more pressure as the anvil continuously drains the opponent. One thing to note is that it’s missing a Sheoldred, the Apocalypse, probably for spacing reasons. But if splashed properly, it would nicely reinforce the deck’s drain pressure synergy as well.

Dedicated Mishra Meld
For the most consistent Mishra Meld deck yet (at least thematically), CopieRightGaming hit a good combo spot for getting to Mishra, Lost to Phyrexia as quickly as possible with the use of Bitter Reunion. This mitigates the summoning sickness limitation of Mishra’s Meld requirement, plus allowing Phyrexian Dragon Engine to hit the graveyard as needed. Goldhound acts as a surprisingly efficient early-game weenie, while becoming the mana requirement of Bitter Reunion’s second ability.
