5 Tasty Toxic Standard Decks, Figuratively and Literally

Practical data at last. With various streamers and content creators showcasing Phyrexia: All Will Be One for Early Access, we finally get an answer to the most burning question since the leaks first came flooding in.

Is Toxic really worth it?

Apparently yeah. And since this set incentivizes building for any color with the ability, there is practically no shortage of ideas for strategies and combos. Add a healthy does of trigger abilities and non-combat resources, and it can even do so much more.

Do Nothing Win

Toxic on Dimir kind of works as a juggle between recycling resources and finding loopholes to keep the sting of poison counters consistent without relying on combat. This Early Access brew in particular, does this using a myriad of Proliferation resources, with the assistance of Voidwing Hybridimage for poison counter consistency. Vraska, Betrayal's Stingimage could even revive it indefinitely, given the correct play tempo.

Staff of Compleationimage also works quite great here. Well, it's not perfect. But paying life for a simple tap ability isn’t really as risky anymore if the game is no longer a life point race.

Toxic Poison

Another delectable Early Access brew showcases this time the power of a Selesnya Toxic deck. Aside from providing consistent answers to defensive situations (where smaller Toxic setups might struggle), it can deftly switch between hitting opponent’s life and inflicting poison counters, as it was originally designed. Funnily enough, Venerated Rotpriestimage carries only half the deck’s primary Toxic infliction strategy. Instead, it is equally divided to Homestead Courageimage and Slaughter Singerimage.

Ajani, Sleeper Agentimage, who was poorly received before, now shines in this deck somewhat well. He can maintain a steady stream of resources (either draws or +1/+1 counters) for the Toxic weenies to keep punching through.

Abzan Toxic

Swinging over to an Abzan build, Swayze’s Early Access poison counter deck runs pretty similar to LegendVDs, but with access to Necrogen Rotpriestimage and Vraska, Betrayal's Stingimage. This dulls the focus on switcheroo strategies, and instead goes all out on the offensive each turn. Bloated Contaminatorimage becomes even more of a threat here, and would most likely be the primary target of removal for players who know what this deck is up to. Then again, there’s so many targets that at least some of them will always make it through.

Toxic Turn 3 Combo

This Simic Early Access Toxic deck focuses entirely on Venerated Rotpriestimage, with tons of targeting sorceries and instants that prevents the opponent from damaging your built-up board state. At least one strategy involves casting a March of Swirling Mistimage with a single blue hand card exile cost to protect two Rotpriests in play. This will instantly generate four poison counters with a single mana without even attacking. Needless to say, despite this deck having alternative strategies, it still slows down massively without a constant Rotpriest on hand.

Oh, if you’re going Simic with self-targeting spells anyway, splashing an Ivy, Gleeful Spellthiefimage and Stormchaser Drakeimage always helps.

Simic Tempo Toxic

Yet another Early Access Simic Toxic deck that focuses directly on Venerated Rotpriestimage. In fact, the only other Toxic creature in this deck is Bloated Contaminatorimage. While the strategy is largely similar to the previous Simic deck, there’s a bit more control in the mix. The deck also adds Security Bypassimage, which helps to ensure poison counter infliction using unblockability, looting, and slow pumping… if the target doesn’t get strangled first.
