Standard - Ravnica Constructed Event - 4-color Gate

TL;DR This is for the 2 day event that rewards 300g and 1 rare for going 5-0 for paying 250g.

Hello! I've been having a ton of success with my version of the Gates deck in the Ravnica Constructed event on arena, and thought it was time to share it. In my last 10 runs I've had only one run where I didn't hit at least 4 wins, and 6 of them were 5-0 or 5-1. Most of my losses have been from me punting.

I like Ravnica Constructed because I'm still building my collection, and the 250 gold entry price combined with the relatively low power level of the decks in the event are a great place to go infinite. You get your money back plus at least 1 guaranteed rare at 4 wins, and profit at 5. It's a shame it's only got about 42 hours left (at time of writing).

First and foremost, I've only been playing MTG for about 2 weeks, so any feedback on my quick guide here is much appreciated! I do have an extensive background in card games though, I played Yu-Gi-Oh in my young teens and won quite a few prizes in local tournaments and such. I've played Hearthstone since the beta and could be described as "semi-pro" having played in and won my fair share of small tournaments over there. Anyways, here's the deck!

3 Archway Angel (RNA) 3
4 Azorius Guildgate (RNA) 243
2 Circuitous Route (GRN) 125
2 Deafening Clarion (GRN) 165
4 Gates Ablaze (RNA) 102
2 Growth Spiral (RNA) 178
4 Gruul Guildgate (RNA) 249
4 Guild Summit (GRN) 41
2 Hydroid Krasis (RNA) 183
4 Izzet Guildgate (GRN) 251
2 Plaza of Harmony (RNA) 254
4 Selesnya Guildgate (GRN) 255
4 Simic Guildgate (RNA) 257
4 Gatebreaker Ram (RNA) 126
4 Gate Colossus (RNA) 232
2 Gateway Plaza (RNA) 247
4 Frilled Mystic (RNA) 174
2 Knight of Autumn (GRN) 183
2 Forest (RNA) 264
1 Open the Gates (RNA) 133

For some of the defining card choices:

Archway Angel: This card is an exceptional stall tool in the aggro matchup. Thanks to only having access to GRN and RNA, aggro decks are much slower, and I can't tell you how many times I've been at 1-2hp and dropped a couple of these guys to heal back up beyond 20 hp. They usually just scoop when you play the second one.

Deafening Clarion: Another card as good for healing as it is for the board wipe. Giving your Gate Colossus lifelink while simultaneously clearing the opponents creatures is a massive tempo swing.

Knight of Autumn: There are a lot of enchantments in the absence of all of the hard removal of the other sets, which can make Knight of Autumn a great card for stabilizing the board in any matchup. But it's greatest purpose is served when it is used to remove Gate Colossus in the mirror match, as he's an artifact creature ;)

Frilled Mystic: Another great card in the mirror matchup. Protects your big creatures and denies theirs, keeping their face open for quick kills. This is another card that just makes my opponents scoop when they realize the Gatebreaker Ram is ramming their face next turn no matter what they do.

Guild Summit: Incredible draw engine. When paired with Circuitous Route this thing will have you overdrawing every turn. Never put two of them on the board together xD

Hydroid Krasis: Can't go wrong with a couple of Hydroid Krasis. Just when Dimir thinks they've weathered the storm and got you on the ropes, you refill your entire hand and heal back up. With Gate Colossus also returning from the graveyard, this deck never runs out of big threats or life gain.

Gateway Plaza: This gate might seem a little bit strange, but it's a beautiful mana-fixer and is a necessity in this four color deck, in my experience.

Plaza of Harmony: This is our only land that doesn't enter tapped, so it makes it possible to actually play our 3 CMC cards on turn 3. It synergizes with our gates to fix our mana a bit and can give us some much needed early healing as well. Keep in mind these don't count as gates and won't factor into cards like Gates Ablaze.

Final tip: Make sure to always mulligan if you don't have at least 3 lands in your starting hand with this deck. Maybe this is a given but as a new player to Magic myself I've made this mistake a lot and failed to curve out.

And that's about it! The meta in Ravnica CE is pretty much Rakdos aggro, Orzhov aggro, Dimir Control, and other versions of this gates deck. But I think ours is the best, we usually beat aggro handily, Dimir should counter us but we edge them out quite consistently, and the mirror match gives a huge advantage to whoever is on the play, but it becomes a cake walk for us if we get the first creature on board and start leaving mana up to frilled mystic whatever they do.
