Standard - Kaldheim Elves

General Idea:

  • The idea is to aggro the greedy decks that are a big part of the meta and use efficient 3-drops, Skemfar Avenger, and Agadeem's awakening to generate value.
  • We can get away with a slightly inefficient mana curve because Wildborn Preserver will stop extra mana going to waste and Jaspera Sentinel will let us turn our creatures into mana so we can play our 4-drops early.
  • You usually want to play like an aggro deck, but if you're sure your opponent doesn't have much removal and they do have lots of blockers you can wait and build up your board until you can break the deadlock with Harald Unites the Elves, Shadowsage, or Elvish Warmasters's Active.
  • This deck is pretty strong against anything that doesn't have mass removal or lots of pressure (like mono green or blue) and has a good chance against decks that are very slow or don't have graveyard hate/mass exile effects. Adventures has a lot too much value to beat consistently, but if you get lucky you'll just be too fast. Playing against black control with Shadow's Verdict and lots of ramp is hard but if you win the first game you're in with a solid chance.
  • This deck is not a T1 deck

Tips if you want to give it a go:

  • When playing this deck, you usually want to start of by getting one of each mana colour, then get 2G in case you want to cast two creatures on thhe same turn, then get 3B for Agadeem's.
  • Ideally you want to cast your Zendikar Lands as spells but it's never worth risking missing one of your first 4 mana drops in order to save a card in hand.
  • Don't worry too much about your life total, this deck is faster than most others and you should have plenty of chump blockers if you need them.
  • When you have a Warmaster you can play one creature on your turn and then flash Preserver in on your opponents turn to get two 1/1s from it.
  • Play Realmwalker as early as possible unless you expect a boardwipe before you can use it.
  • You can use Fabled Passage to shuffle your deck if you don't have something you can cast with Realmwalker on top.
  • If playing Realmwalker with 4 mana try and leave 1 green open in case your top card is a 1-drop. With 5 mana you want BG, and with 6 mana BGG
Watch out for autotapper when you have Jaspera Sentinel or Canopy Tactician on the board or Agadeem's in your hand, it will try and use up all you green mana first
  • If your opponent isn't running Shadow's Verdict, then you probably also want to save Agadeem's to recover from a boardwipe if you don't need it for the mana.
  • I like to save HUE until I know that it will have soemthing to resurrect, but playing it on curve is great as well
  • You can trigger wildborn preservers ability with another preserver at instant speed in order to save the first preserver from heartless act!
  • I'm not sure if Murderous Rider deserves its place in the sideboard - eat to extinction is the other candidate. After some experimention, I believe that Tyvar is less useful than canopy tactician in the vast majority of cases.

Sideboarding

  • When playing vs aggro I ditch one Avenger, two tacticians, and two trackers for 4 Vandals and my other shadowsage. Sometimes I ditch the other trackers for fears as well, I'm still deciding on the optimum
  • Playing vs other midrange decks varies but if they are go wide decks you'll need the Crippling fears. Everything else depends on what the other deck does
