The classic cycling deck from Ikoria but with Irencrag Pyromancer
and Rielle, the Everwise
as big cycling payoffs. The pyromancer controls the board pretty well and Rielle is a big card advantage machine (as well as finisher sometimes). The deck still wins games with good-old Zenith Flare
. Later in the game, it can be useful to hard-cast some spells with cycling, such as Boon of the Wish-Giver
and Frostveil Ambush
.
Against control, we want to go aggro with Flourishing Fox
, Drannith Stinger
and Valiant Rescuer
. The key is to not employ many threats at the same time, since we'll need cards to cycle as well. Games will usually end with Zenith Flare finishing the job after our creatures have been wiped-off. Playing Rielle, the Everwise with mana open to draw two cards out of a cycler is a key play in this match-up. Against aggro, nothing's better than Irencrag Pyromancer. Her toughness is hard for Gruul to deal with, and if she stays on the battlefield for one or two turns, the game will pretty much have been stabilized. Dimir Rogues is a tricky match-up, but their deck's strategy helps us accelerating a Zenith Flare finish. The 4th copy of Zenith Flare should be boarded-in, so there's more chance of having one in hand before they mill it.
I honestly don't know why this card is not regularly used in cycling decks. It turns our 1-mana cyclers into 1-mana draw-2-cards.
Many best-of-three cycling lists fill the sideboard with non-cycling cards. This takes away from the deck's main strategy. For this list, cards like Shark Typhoon
and Splendor Mare
are great additions in some matchups while still enabling the cycling payoffs.
A big fox and Rielle can be nice targets for Splendor Mare's lifelink counter, but Irencrag Pyromancer is my favourite, as it can cast a free-helix each turn.
