Arena Standard - White Control

The deck that started as a bit, but turned out to have legs.

With the top decks in Standard right now skewing aggro, this deck includes a lot of early interaction. Glass Casketimage and Skyclave Apparation take care of early threats and can be blinked later with Yorion, Sky Nomadimage if needed.

I've cut the number of wraths down to 6 to make room for 3x Drannith Magistrateimage, which has been great against Gruul/Naya Adventures. Sadly it is not so effective against Sultai Ultimatum's removal suite but it can buy some time if deployed strategically.

What really makes this deck tick, in my opinion, are the man-lands Faceless Havenimage and Crawling Barrensimage. Make sure you time their activations right to maximize value off of Felidar Retreatimage triggers.

MATCH-UPS:

ROGUE MILL

Glass Casketimage and Sigrid, God-Favoredimage are what we're looking for in our opening hand. The latter is especially important as we have basically zero instant-speed interaction outside of Sigrid. I have found that folks tend to get surprised by her for that reason, so take advantage of this to 2-for-1 the opponent. And don't forget: with eight boardwipes, it is very often advantageous to use Sigrid to save our own [Baneslayer Angel]] from a Heartless Actimage, so we can get it back later after we blow up the board.

This is a tough match-up, but what else is new. It does help to be a Yorion deck, buys us a couple turns in terms of mill. These matches tend to become a game of chicken. Hold your threats until they tap out, or if that's not possible, stagger them to try to bait out their counterspells. Being a rogue deck is useful here as they are often not sure what they should or should not counter. Felider Retreat is usually our best bet at winning, so make resolving that your priority.

MONO-RED

Again, early interaction is key here. Focus on taking out Anax, Hardened in the Forgeimage with exile effects to keep them from rebuilding after the first board wipe.

This is the match-up where Sigrid, God-Favoredimage REALLY shines. Embercleaveimage alpha strikes get completely blown out by her. These decks also are almost certain to need two cards to deal with a Baneslayer Angelimage so that's another good spot to eek out some advantage. If you can extend the game to turn 6+ you're almost certain to win.

MONO-WHITE

There's slightly less pressure here than from Mono-Red. Luminarch Aspirantimage is usually the first target for our removal, but you will likely have to clear away a Alseid of Life's Bountyimage first. Ditto for Selfless Saviorimage and boardwipes. Luckily this deck has a hard time rebuilding so just stay on top of their threats and you should overwhelm them in the late game.

SULTAI ULTIMATUM

Woof. Well, we have three Archon of Emeriaimage to shut off their main plan, but outside of that, this is probably the toughest match-up. Unlike the other decks here, this deck wants the game to go long too. It's not impossible to overcome their card quality if that happens, but it is extremely difficult.

Our man-lands can help by putting on some early pressure. Their deck does take a while to get going, so we should take advantage of this by ramping with Solemn Simulacrumimage and holding onto our key interaction pieces. Unfortunately, Glass Casketimage and Skyclave Apparation are not at their best here, with the former having almost 0 targets outside of tokens from Alrund's Epiphanyimage.

Felidar Retreatimage is a good way to force them to waste their removal on tokens, but beware of tapping out for it on turn 4 only to get blown out by Binding the Old Godsimage. Save it till turn 5 to get your trigger.

If this deck continues to be the problem it is I will need to consider some more modifications. Right now it's the only deck ours consistently has poor match-ups against. Unfortunately the best option would be to main some number of Weathered Runestoneimage, a card that has little to no utility in other matchups.

NAYA ADVENTURES / FLING

This deck used to be fairly easy to keep on a leash, but the recent addition of the Unleash Furyimage/Kazuul's Furyimage combo means we have to be more vigilant, as they can suddenly win out of nowhere off of one Showdown of the Skaldsimage if the shields are down.

Try your best to bait out as many creatures as you can before the first boardwipe if possible. And don't be afraid to use Glass Casketimage early to take out a Lovestruck Beastimage token to keep the pressure off. Remember, we can blink it later with Yorion.

Baneslayer Angelimage shines in this match-up. Big enough to dodge most removal, blocks their Goldspan Dragonimage no problem.
