To completely control the board and shut down our opponents.
Teferi, Who Slows the Sunset is the glue of our deck and who the deck was built around. Every one of his abilities synergizes with the playstyle of the deck. His +1 is perfect with our artifacts and keeping up mana for our counterspells. His -2, while not used as often, is still very good for digging for any answers we need. His -7 ability is what we are shooting for in this deck though. It's almost always game if we can ultimate him. It allows us to play whatever we need and still be able to control our opponents board. Teferi also combos very well with Mysterious Tome // Chilling Chronicle, but I'll explain that more later.
Teferi, Temporal Pilgrim is another way we can win if we don't want to continuously cylce Devious Cover-Up. He and his token synergize very well with our ability to draw. His -12 ability isn't very useful for us since we can usually take care of anything on board, but it has come in handy against Superfriends decks. Overall, he fits the theme of the deck and is another win con we can rely on if need be.
Mysterious Tome // Chilling Chronicle is a huge centerpiece of our deck. In my opinion, this card is severely underrated. It offers card draw and a way to tap down whatever nonland permanent we need tapped. The card has been fantasic at keeping our Planeswalkers alive or refilling our hand. With Teferi, Who Slows the Sunset on board, this card becomes even better. Ideally, you want to activate it's front side ability, then untap it with Teferi, then tap whatever permanent you need tapped during our opponent's turn. Rinse and repeat. This "combo" has won me many games and is very hard for our opponents to deal with. Essentially, if you have Teferi on board, it cost 2 mana to draw a card and tap a permanent. It's fantastic in the deck and is key to controlling the board.
Reckoner Bankbuster is another artifact that works well with Teferi, Who Slows the Sunset. On the turn you use the last counter on it, you can untap it with Teferi and attack or keep it up as a blocker. Though, it does lose steam if we have to continuously board wipe and it has nothing to crew with. The card is just overall great in the deck and keeps our momentum in the early/mid game.
The Celestus is the classic Teferi, Who Slows the Sunset combo. It always feel great to untap this and another land to hold up mana for our counterspells. I personally think 1 copy is enough the deck, but you could add another copy if you want to play it more. The biggest issue is that it doesn't necessarily help us control the board or draw cards when compared to the other artifacts. I hardly ever use it's second tap ability. The only time it has been beneficial is when we have Teferi's emblem or during worst case senarios and we need to dig through our deck.
Devious Cover-Up is our main win con in the deck. Ideally you want to keep cycling the copies with each other, and infinitely refill your deck so you'll never deck yourself out. I've thought about adding another copy in the off chance our first copy gets exiled or 2 copies get milled, but I decided against it to cut down on the our turn 4 plays. Witness the Future fills the role a third copy. REMEMBER: You can counter your own spells if you need to cycle your other copy.
Dissipate is our main counter in the deck. It fills the spot better than Make Disappear would since we don't have any creatures to sacrifice to it's Casualty 1. Overall, it's a great counterspell and completely shuts down whatever their play may be.
Depopulate is a great at keeping our Planeswalkers alive and our main way of beating aggro decks. Playing this card on turn 4 is huge against aggro decks and is usually our only way winning.
Farewell is another board wipe, but it's primary use is against enchantments or artifacts. We never want to exile our graveyard, but, if you have to, make sure Devious Cover-Up isn't in the graveyard.
Fateful Absence is our only single targetted removal spell in the deck. It's mainly used against Planeswalkers that got through, but it does help out against any other single creature we need destroyed.
Memory Deluge helps us dig through our deck and find any answers we need. It's overall a great card to have in any control deck.
Witness the Future is another way to add Devious Cover-Up back into the deck. That is literally it's only use. I added after I had couple games where my other copy of Devious Cover-Up got exiled. You could replace it with another copy of [[Devious Cover-Up], but the deck is already crowded in the 4 mana slot.
Silver Scrutiny is another way for us to dig through our deck. If we have Tefer's emblem, it gets even better. It also synergizes well with Teferi, Temporal Pilgrim and his token.
Turn 1: We have no Turn 1 spells to cast.
Turn 2: It just depends on what what deck we are playing against and if we are on the draw. Ideally though, you'd want to play Reckoner Bankbuster here.
Turn 3: Again it just depends on what deck we are playing against. If we are playing against an aggro deck, I prefer to play Mysterious Tome // Chilling Chronicle if I know I can play Depopulate next turn. If we are playing against midrange or control, I like to hold back a Dissipate and pass the turn.
Turn 4: I usually either pass turn with a counterspell/removal spell up or I cast Depopulate here. I never cast Teferi, Who Slows the Sun here unless I know for a fact he won't die.
Turn 5: Again, I prefer to just sit back and react to our opponent's plays. Any counter/removal or activating one of our artifacts on our opponent's turn works her.
Turn 6: This is where I usually cast Teferi, Who Slows the Sunset. By casting him here we get around Make Disappear and also leave up enough mana for a counterspell if use his +1.
Turn 7+: If everything went right, you should have the board controlled at this point. Just sit back, relax, and answer anything your opponents throw at you.
Jace, the Perfected Mind was our win con in an earlier iteration of the deck. I just found that the card didn't fit in with theme of the deck. I wanted to build a deck around the idea of just having Teferi casting spells from his tome, so I didn't want to include any other Planeswalkers. Plus my 4 mana spot is already crowded as is. With all that said, you could still add him to the deck if you wanted a faster win con.
The Stone Brain was in an earlier iteration of the deck and did fairly well. I just found that I wanted to include more copies of other cards. I do occassionally put 2 copies in depending on how I want to play. I think it's a pretty decent card, and has been helpful when it sees play.
The Eternal Wanderer is in the same situation as Jace. It would be nice to have and would probably improve the deck, but I wanted to stay on theme.
March of Otherworldly Light is something I've toyed with adding. It would be helpful if I couldn't draw a farewell or needed to exile a creature. I just couldn't find another card I wanted to cut.
Blue Sun's Twilight is something I wanted to add, but just couldn't find room for it. I could see it being helpful if we can't counter or destroy a creature, but 7 mana is a lot to ask when we want to keep mana up for our counterspells.
I originally based the deck off of my Teferi's Spellbook deck which basically had the same idea, but added red as it's win con. Overall, I think the deck is in a good place and has been good climbing the ladder. The deck isn't for everyone though. The deck doesn't have a dedicated win con and doesn't fit everyones playstyle. If you want a deck that is fast paced and likes to finish your opponents off quickly, then this deck isn't for you. BUT if you like to dominate the board and don't mind playing the long game, then I recommend you try out the deck. Thanks for viewing Teferi's Tome!
