Introduction

This is my take on a mono black aggro deck. The deck attempts to be balanced vs. both aggro and control.

This deck is a work in progress. I am experimenting with different cards.

Main Deck

1 Mana Spells

9 Cards

• 4 Cut Down — The best 1 mana black removal spell.
• 2 Duress — A great card discard spell. It's very important to have some card discard in the deck, when many opponents play with sweepers like Sunfall or Farewell.
• 3 Evolved Sleeper — Boostable creature that can draw you cards.

2 Mana Spells

9 Cards

• 4 Go for the Throat — A great removal spell.
• 2 Misery's Shadow — Shuts down many creatures with dying effects, such as Ao, the Dawn Sky and Quirion Beastcaller. It is also useful against Dennick, Pious Apprentice // Dennick, Pious Apparition and similar cards. It can also be boosted up, if you have lots of mana available!
• 3 Tenacious Underdog — A great 2-drop that comes back from the grave.

3 Mana Spells

8 Cards + 3 Cards with 3 Mana Prototype Ability = 11 Cards

• 3 Graveyard Trespasser // Graveyard Glutton — Perhaps the best 3 mana drop for black. It has a great ward ability, can become 4/4 during night, can cause direct damage, can gain life, and can remove key cards from graveyards.
• 3 Liliana of the Veil — Liliana is very dangerous, when the opponent is playing with only a few big creatures. However, if the opponent has something like Skrelv's Hive, Wedding Announcement // Wedding Festivity, or Mirrex, Lily is not that great.
• 2 Phyrexian Arena — Good card draw against control decks.
• 3 Phyrexian Fleshgorger (Prototype) — A great artifact creature that has a 3 mana prototype ability. It goes around Cut Down and Go for the Throat and its direct removal costs life. It's great also for having lifelink and menace, which are useful both for attacking and for defense. You can also play it as 7/5 in the late game, when its direct removal costs 7 life.

4 Mana Spells

4 Cards

• 4 Sheoldred, the Apocalypse — Perhaps the best 4 mana creature in standard.

5 Mana Spells

2 Cards

• 2 Gix's Command — Excellent utility card.
   

Lands

25 Cards

• 19 Swamp
• 2 Field of Ruin — Some land destruction.
• 3 Mishra's Foundry — A good man-land. Lands are not destroyed by sweepers, such as Sunfall and Farewell, which makes man-lands useful against control decks.
• 1 Takenuma, Abandoned Mire — A legendary channel land that can be used to return one of your creatures or planeswalkers to your hand from your graveyard.

Tried Out But Removed Cards

These are the cards that I have tried out but removed from the main deck. The cards can still exist on the sideboard.

1 Mana Spells

• March of Wretched Sorrow — Cost too much mana to remove a creature. It needs 4 mana to remove a 2/3 creature, when you can do it for 1 mana with Cut Down.

2 Mana Spells

• Ayara's Oathsworn — Too slow. It grows up, but too slowly. Also, it is weak in defense, because it needs to attack to grow. The tutor ability also triggers way too late in the game. I never got to make use of it in any of my games.
• Sheoldred's Edict

3 Mana Spells

• Blot Out — Costs 1 mana too much. I think Sheoldred's Edict is better, especially with Misery's Shadow.
• Gix, Yawgmoth Praetor

4 Mana Spells

• Phyrexian Obliterator — Good on paper, but in practice it isn't that great. It also forces you to play all swamps, which isn't that good. It mostly works against people who don't know how play the game. 
• Sorin the Mirthless

5 Mana Spells

• Sheoldred // The True Scriptures — Costs too much mana for an aggro deck and is a noncombo with Graveyard Trespasser // Graveyard Glutton and Misery's Shadow. Sheoldred can be a good card in some matchups, especially against some decks like Mono Blue Tempo, which fill their graveyards with cards. But is it Tier 1 caliber? Maybe not. 

6 Mana Spells

• Corrupt — Costs too much mana and forces you to play all swamps to make full use of it.

Lands

• Blast Zone — Way too slow to use and it does not kill tokens. It also kills your stuff.
