Arena Standard - Mono Black Midrange

Starting off, we have our Instants. Cut Down, Go for the Throat, and Bitter Triumph are useful and important tools for us to maintain control of the board early game from both aggro and other mid-range decks. Bitter Triumph can take care of planeswalkers as well which would otherwise be our removal blind spot at the cost of life or discarding a card such as an extra land or creature we are far from playing still. Outrageous Robbery is our last instnat, x and 2 black to exile the top x cards of an opponents library face down allowing us to play them with mana of any color. A great finisher and top end card we can use in control matchups or against domain decks if we are in a long and drawn out game.

Moving into sorceries we have Deadly Cover-Up and Path of Peril. Honorary member being the adventure side of Virtue of Persistence, a powerful -3/-3 with some life gain on it. These wipes will allow us to take care of wide boards, mostly needed against mono red, mono white, and it’s love child boros right now. Thanks to our mana base we can cleave Path of Peril on occasion if necessary. Deadly Cover-Up will get rid of anything over cost 2 if we can't cleave and for collecting evidence, we can then remove a common wincon from their

We have a singular artifact in Collector’s Vault. 2 mana to loot and create a treasure token is a great deal, ultimately refunding half it’s mana cost for usage later. This in conjunction with outrageous robbery truly makes the card outrageous robbery. Discarding creatures isn’t the worst thing in the world either, as we move into our only enchantment, Virtue of Persistence. Returning our discarded or killed creatures to the battlefield at the start of upkeep is about as powerful as it comes, or the opponents if we so choose. Never be afraid to loot away a creature to return at a later date.

Moving into creatures, we only have 4 different ones, but powerful they are. 3 Tenacious Underdog’s. Probably one of the best 2 drops printed in a long time. 3/2 at it’s base, but can be blitzed from the graveyard for 2 black and 2 colorless with 2 life letting you draw a card when it dies at that point as well. Card draw on a body that just won’t stop, tenacious indeed. 3 Graveyard Trespasser’s reside in the deck. Picking apart the opponents graveyard for life gain and loss, removing combo pieces they might have stuck there on a 3/3 body with ward of discarding a card or a 4/4 at night. 4 Preacher of the Schism. Our Vampire Cleric does a lot for costing only 3 mana with a 2/4 body. Have more life than the opponent? Draw a card and lose a life. Have less life than an opponent? Gain 1 life and create a 1/1 vampire token with lifelink. Tied on life? Do both. He can spiral out of control so fast and is our sole 4 of due to his effects stacking effectively and comboing with our last creature effectively. Sheoldred. Shealdred, the Apocalypse should have probably been banned the last few passover, but here we are, almost to rotation, a rotation of 3 years, and she’s survived. Do I need to explain the card itself? In our deck, she’s really here to gain us life off our Colelctor’s Vault loot, Preacher of the Schism draws, and nullify the Tenacious Underdog life payment, and it works great.

Lastly, we have our planeswalkers. 3 Liliana of the Veil because as a 3 drop she is just so good. Let’s us pick apart the opponents hand, with our plan to eat their yard and get ours back, works well to force a sacrifice in most opposing mid-range or combo decks with creatures, and has a near game ending ultimate on it. Sorin the Mirthless, our emo Sorin. Letting us effectively draw from the top of our library by paying with life, creating 2-3 flying life linkers, and whose ultimate also practically ends the game with a 26 life point swing.

Land base is super simple. 25 lands. 20 basic swamps. 2 Takenuma, Abandoned Mire if we don’t have Virtue of Persistence out or want to grab a palneswalker at the end of an opponents turn. Crystal Grotto is how we make that white at times for Path of Peril and a free scry. A Mirrex to create mites which can be useful to counter strategies forcing us to sacrifice creatures or permanents and lastly a MIshra’s Foundry. Sneaky at finishing games or as a blocker.
