Modern - Delina, Wild Mage - Tokens, Steal, & Sac

This is a deck idea where I converted the concept of a Delina, Wild Mageimage EDH deck to Modern for a customer on Fiverr. If you're interested in making a deck, you can find me on Fiverr as Genoslugcs.

The Deck

You'll be pretty familiar with all of the elements here. There's a way to make nearly infinite tokens with Delina and Pixie Guideimage or Barbarian Classimage, and there are ways to steal opposing creatures and sacrifice them for value. All the sac outlets of course work well for sacrificing your tokens before exile as well. Let's break down some of the card choices.

The Combo

As mentioned, you can make nearly infinite tokens when you use Delina's ability to copy Pixie Guideimage. I'm sure you know how this would work, so I won't bore you with a long explanation. In short, Pixie Guide lets you roll extra dice when you roll and lets you ignore the worst of the dice. You'll also be sending a 1/3 flyer toward your opponent. So, each Pixie you create ups the chances of creating another one.

I want to hit you with some math. Obviously, you're most likely to fizzle early on - When you look at just your odds of rolling a 15-20 with only Delina out (and no other support) it's around 30%. With one Pixie Guide out the odds go to around 51%. With three (or more) you have around a 76% chance of continuing on the combo... around six copies puts you at 90% and 12 or more would be 99%.

I included three copies of Delina, Wild Mageimage, and Pixie Guideimage. But there are also four copies of Profane Tutorimage to help find combo pieces. To further support this plan I added in a few other things that you can tutor for too. First, is the Barbarian Classimage which there are three copies of. I wouldn't be opposed to going to two but three was ok.

Next, there are singleton copies of Harmonic Prodigyimage (to double Delina triggers as I'm sure you know) and Combat Celebrantimage so you can win with twice as few tokens if you can pull off double combats. Lastly, I added a single copy of Terror of the Peaksimage - I want this to feel as much like your EDH deck as possible, and adding more familiar cards helps there. Beyond that, with this out each Pixie token will ping something for one damage. So, it's another way to generate value/combo. This is also useful for playing around cards like Ghostly Prisonimage or Ensnaring Bridgeimage.

There is also a single copy of Conjurer's Closetimage, which I know you're familiar with. That said, there are a few sideboard cards that I'll go over later that this is great with as well.

Stealing Opposing Creatures

Stealing creatures and using them to attack opponents is always fun... I included a total of six cards that steal creatures. They are all singletons and all from the original deck. We have:

I found six to be a good number for a 60-card deck. Remember you can tutor for one if you really need it too.

Sacrifice Outlets

There are a total of eight ways of sacrificing things. We have:

These are all pretty straightforward. I tried to balance some things for going against decks without many (or any) creatures. For example, Bone Splintersimage is a missed opportunity to cash in a token going to exile if there is no creature to target. Deadly Dispute generates so much value by the way.

Interaction

As far as answering opposing problems, we have a few options. If playing against a creature-based deck, things are easy. Steal their creatures. Plus we have the Bone Splintersimage and there are two Terminateimage. If you go against control, things are different. First, we have three Thoughtsieze main board. Aside from that, you'll have seven dead cards (the "act of treason" effects & Terminate) that you'll want to board out for games two and three.

I've added in a whole package of cards to bring in in place of these - You'll board in the Kroxa, Titan of Death's Hungerimage, Lightning Skelementalimage, Pact of Negationimage (to protect the combo), and Bedevilimage.

Kroxa and Skelemental both strip their hand and Kroxa can be cast from the yard if he gets countered. Furthermore, it's amazing to make a token of this with Delina. Bedevil is there to remove their Planeswalkers or troublesome artifacts.

The Mana Base

We have a total of 24 lands including the MDFC lands. One of these is Cavern of Soulsimage. This is here as a catch-all against control. You can name Shaman to make sure Delina resolves or name Dragon to make sure your late-game bombs make it into play. Other than that, the only thing note-worthy is a single Otawara, Soaring Cityimage which is just great removal. The fetches can grab out the Steam Ventsimage and Xander's Loungeimage to make sure you have blue mana for Pixie.

There are:

  • 17 red sources
  • 16 black sources
  • 8 blue sources

Of these sources, there is at least one basic of each in case you get hit with a Path to Exileimage or Blood Moonimage.

Alternate Wins

Aside from the combo, you can win value-based games by stealing threats and saving them and even a few tokens with Delina can be fairly aggressive. There is also the Terror of the Peaksimage that I mentioned before. Aside from that, there is one more thing I included - A single Goldspan Dragonimage and Hellkite Tyrantimage to go with it. With token copies, it's not impossible to get up to 20 treasures and win the game.

I thought this was sweet and that you'd enjoy having those familiar cards as well. Furthermore, it's nice to have some big threats to top-deck late game. And again, these can be tutored for! Naming Dragon with Cavern and swinging to victory actually won me a game in testing against a counterspells heavy deck.
