Historic - [Artisan] Davriel's Budget Black Rack
For the Historic Artisan event, I thought it would be fun to run just some mono-black control.
The deck is pretty simple. The wincon is essentially between two main cards:
Outside of Narset and Kioria, Davriel might be one of the more playable 3 mana uncommon WotS planeswalkers.
Torment of Scarabs hits hard when the opponent is heckbent. Also forces the choice between damage or keeping cards in hand/permenants in play.
Cry of the Carnarium
is possibly one of the best budget sweepers, if not black's only option in MTGA at this rarity(unsure).
Poison the Cup
might seem a bit off instead of cards like Heartless Act
and Eliminate
. There are a few reasons for the inclusion. Foretell keeps your spell safe from similar decks. The foretell bonus is a scry 2, which helps get to the answers needed. The foretell also avoids the debuff from Painful Bond
For other removal choices Grasp of Darkness
and Flunk
are good instant removal and can hit indestrutable creatures.
Duress
, Divest
, and Agonizing Remorse
all serve various purposes. This list is primarly tuned for Bo1 MTGA. Feel free to play with any number of these.
Ill-Gotten Inheritance
serves as a backup to scarabs and the little lifegain isn't much but allows us to ignore some damage from painful bond use, and gives us a late game mana sink for 4 direct damage and gaining 4 life. This is kind of a flex spot that could be used for more removal or something like Underworld Dreams
.
The deck has one sleeper/backup wincon in a single Heirloom Mirror.
This card can help with late game card selection, ditching unneeded spells/lands to eventually create a 4/4 which also has the ability to exile creatures from graveyards to get bigger. The number of these can go up or down, but probably wouldn't want more than two because it doesn't do much at the start and costs life to use.
