Commander - Ghired's Copy Combos

Midrange Combo

Just changed the list a lot, so I'm updating the description too.  Aaaand I just changed the list a lot again (6/30/25).  Sorry.  But the current list went 1-0 in a big brawl against L.3 and L.4 decks, winning by copying Righteous Valkyrieimage 25 times before giving them all haste and attacking... that's after gaining 1,400 life from the Valkyries entering, then swinging with 26x 54/56 flying Valkyries.  AND my opponents had all just gained 45 life from another opponent trying to combo off, making us draw out our decks!  Luckily, it was only a "try", and someone else drew into a combo-stopper, and my aerial assault was too much for their recent life gain.  Ahh, fun times!  :)

Anyway, this decklist focuses on utilizing the best ways to make token copies of nontoken creatures, by which Ghired lets us go buck wild, making multiple copies of that token.  So the deck is primed with creatures that love to be copied multiple times, some of them for big mana, some of them for quick wincons (imagine casting Chancellor of the Forgeimage with five creatures in play, and then copying it four times... I'll wait while you do the math... those [212 Goblins] are all hasty 1/1's to go wide and win with).  Similarly, copying Harabaz Druidimage four times turns a source of only one mana into five sources of five mana each, making a big splashy turn quite feasible.

I try to put a priority on making copies fast and copying them fast.  That means cheaper copy-spells over more expensive ones, and making copies that enter this turn, versus waiting one round of potential removal before we get to make the first copy.  I prefer being able to make a token copy at instant speed, for responses, or waiting to tap out right before my turn, or in response to combat triggers.  I also prefer token copies that say "except" they have haste, so that when I copy the token, the new copies will also have haste; if the first token copy only "gains" haste, then the subsequent copies won't have haste.  I also prefer to be able to make the token copy before combat, if able, or at the beginning of combat at the latest; tokens that enter tapped and attacking never have haste, nor do ones made at the end of your turn, and making the tokens before attacking gives access to their attack triggers (i.e. Combat Celebrantimage, etc).  Luckily, red alone has tons of options for copying, so we can be a little picky.

That being said, the Companionboard and Maybeboard have turned into the new growing lists of extra cards for this deck in the Maybeboard, and then an alternate concept for Ghired in the Companionboard (based on creating and copying myriad tokens, or other impactful but "generic" token creatures, instead of copying nontoken creatures).  The alternate list for Ghired is just in the starts, and wants cards not meant for this deck, so pay little attention to it when considering the 99 decklist above.

Regarding the potential inclusion of Legendary creatures to target for copying, it's the easiest way to abuse their death triggers.  But with Ghired, we need to copy tokens that entered this turn, so we have to keep the legendary token copy and let the real card go to the grave (or to the library, for some of them), then make copies of the token, abusing the death triggers with ease.

Ideally, I would like to add more creatures that can be sacrificed to grant other creatures protection, and which can be copied to use multiple times.  Similarly, I'd like a few more Cankerbloomimage-type creatures, as I like having artifact and enchantment removal handy, and copying one a few times is never a bad thing.  I also need to get Ranger-Captain of Eosimage/Grand Abolisherimage in here too.

 ~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~

Just a friendly reminder that face-down creatures are still nontoken creatures, and they can tap to copy tokens.  For example, Hauntwoods Shriekerimage is therefore a fun card to abuse because you can copy it and start making lots of extra nontoken manifested creatures to copy wincon tokens with.  Plus, it lets you flip them for cheap, which feeds into our goal of winning faster.  Defiant Survivorimage is worth consideration too, but lags behind in overall synergy by a couple steps.

Don't sleep on Village Bell-Ringerimage, which looks like a handy, albeit "expensive", instant-speed 3-drop to untap all your creatures and re-use them to make more token copies... but its value goes deeper... this Ringer goes infinite when you copy it.  :)  As does Midnight Guardimage, Sunstrike Legionnaireimage, Battered Golemimage, and a few others.

Agate Instigatorimage provides a handy little copy of itself, making it easy to make extra copies of it after you cast it.  You're not likely to kill your opponents by copying it a bunch of times, but the next time you make a bunch of copies of a creature, each of those Agate Instigator copies is going to help seal the win.  Make four extra copies of it (five total token copies), dealing 15 combined damage to opponents, then the next time you copy a creature token (likely) four times (making five total creature tokens that entered), those six Instigators will deal 30 damage to each opponent (for a total of 45 when including the first round).  Even if you can't copy the Offspring token, you still get two triggers of damage per creature you have enter, and the nontoken copy can copy other tokens (as either a 2 or 4-drop spell).  You can add Purphoros, God of the Forgeimage and similar pingers like Witty Roastmasterimage, but Purph can't be copied, and the other pingers only deal 1 damage, and they don't come with a handy token copy that's primed to be copied, either.  So I chose not to go that route, beyond the Instigator.  But obviously, do what makes you happy.

Not only does Ironwill Forgerimage provide a handy way to make token copies of a nontoken creature, but it can give itself myriad, providing token copies of itself to copy with your other creatures, which then provides a means to go buck wild with all your creatures gaining myriad the next turn.  But you're hopefully better off copying another better creature, because that's what the deck is supposed to be chock-full of (i.e., wincons).

Aerial Extortionistimage is quite powerful in this deck, providing a means to repeating big-time card draw (potentially too much, if you're not careful), while also providing regular/repeated temporary removal of permanents that might be trying to get in the way of our fun.  The more times you copy it, the more card draw and 'control' you'll have in play each turn.  But if an opponent's deck leans heavily into exiling cards to cast them, copying Aerial Extortionist too many times can potentially draw your deck out.  So, just be prepared to cast your wincon soon if you set yourself up to draw a lot and draw into it.  Or be prepared to sacrifice some of the Extortionists to limit how bad it gets.

Copying creatures that can copy creatures is always a smart plan to diversify your options and help secure a wincon.  Typically, the Legendary rule will prevent a bunch of those shenanigans, as many of the creatures that create such copies are indeed legendary (Cardic, Soul Kindler is a fun card to get around that with, among others).  The best creature (IMHO) for copying other creatures is Kiki-Jiki, Mirror Breakerimage, but it is, of course, a Legendary creature, so one can't copy it.  But do not fret!  Not only does the front side of Fabe of the Mirror-Breaker give us handy treats, but the backside, Fable of the Mirror-Breaker // Reflection of Kiki-Jikiimage, is a non-Legendary enchantment creature that we can potentially make copies of!  Yes, it got nerfed, and costs 1 mana to activate versus OG-Kiki, but we're not trying to go infinite with it, so it's not a big deal.  Copy it if you can!  :)

Veteran Beastriderimage is very handy by itself, but it's even better with a few extra copies of it in play, as the triggers stack, letting us make a ton of token copies of whatever else we were copying earlier in the turn.  There aren't many nonlegendary creatures you can make copies of that will stack triggers to untap your creatures multiple times during your turn.  Copperhorn Scoutimage can do it as well, plus the likes of Combat Celebrantimage (which easily goes infinite), but the list isn't long, and these cards are absolute gold in this deck!

Felhide Spiritbinderimage caught me off guard... I read it wrong at first, and assumed it would only let me copy my own creatures, but... you can copy ANY creature, like making a token copy of someone's Sheoldred, the Apocalypseimage, then copying it again via Ghired, keeping the new copy, and letting the Felhide copy die to the legendary rule.  Mirage Mirrorimage can let us copy opponents' nonlegendary creatures, but if you copy a legendary creature, then make a token copy with Twinflameimage, you're either sacrificing your Mirage Mirror, or not keeping a token to copy with Ghired.  Felhide gets around that little problem, making the first token for us, whereby copying is easy, and we don't lose our means of copying cards.  It's not amazing for copying our own creatures, because 1) it costs 2 mana each use, 2) the token has haste, but it in't copiable, 3) Felhide has to be tapped to initiate the copying (at least this is easier to accomplish when your commander turns all your nontoken creatures into 'tappers'), and 4) you have to have the creature you want to copy in play to start your turn, which means both it and Felhide have to survive a round of potential removal.  For those reasons it didn't make my first cut.  But being able to copy opponents creatures so easily, and especially being able to easily copy their legendary creatures, their commanders, it's now almost a must-have.

Dryad Arborimage is a land creature.  Nuf said.  Well, maybe not... so just in case, 1) you can use it to tap and copy tokens, but also, 2) you can copy it to ramp more lands(/creatures) into play.  This is a deck Dryad Arbor really shines in!
