This is a fresh take on a deck I made a couple of years ago. The idea is a classic - make something big and throw it at your opponent. It's not too original, but it sure is fun! Fling and aristocrats aren't normally in a deck together, but this straddles the line without ruining the fun for either archetype. The cost of this deck feels high for a pauper deck, but that's largely down to a few select cards and land choice, both of which are non-essential to how this deck runs.
There are two main sac outlets for this deck. The first and most flexible is Defiant Salvager, which allows you to sacrifice creatures and artifacts at sorcery speed. The second is Thorn-Thrash Viashino
. Thorn-Thrash might seem like an odd choice as it only takes effect as it comes into play and can only target creatures, but it holds two advantages. Firstly, your opponent only gets two chances to deal with it in reponse (casting and entering), and secondly, it gets two counters for each creature it devours, making it very large very quickly. The aristocrats side of this deck comes from Falkenrath Noble
. Given the nature of our fling targets, Falkenrath essentially doubles our damage as we grow them ready to be hurled at our opponent. The sac fodder is a bunch of tokens produced from Kuldotha Rebirth
and Nimblewright Schematic
, and a few low-cost creatures like Perilous Myr
and Serrated Scorpion
. Ichor Wellspring
and Deadly Dispute
give us card draw and treasure tokens for extra mana or sac fodder.
The lands for this deck are open to personal choice. Bojuka Bog feels like a free graveyard hate card, while the two artifact lands give extra sac fodder if the game drags on and you need those extra points of damage. Night Market
gives better flexibility, as does Jagged Barrens
. The two bridges seem strange at first, but they're there to splash green for Thorn-Thrash's trample ability, but could be cut in favour of other lands. Cut and swap to suit your preferences!
The sideboard is fairly self-explanitory in this deck. Artifact hate and removal from Abrade; Pyroblast
to deal with counters; and Nihil Spellbomb
for graveyard hate. Crash Through
and Bitter Reunion
and there to give flexibility around counter decks that are likely to make fling less plausable, and Echoing Return
to give you any additional fodder you might need if you run out in your hand or on the board.
Arguably, this deck could cut the expensive cards and still work perfectly fine for closer to $18. The price breakdown for this deck as of mid February 2025 is as follows:
Creatures: $3.50
Spells: $9.76
Lands: $23.87
Sideboard: £20.34
Total Cost: $57.47 or £43.77 or €52.43
Lastly, some additions/substitutions that could be made are: Dross Skullbomb for extra card draw and reanimation; No Way Out
for discard and extra sac fodder; Grim Bauble
for removal and scrying; and Prized Statue
for added treasure tokens. These are only a few of the many possible suggestions, but any of these would have their uses if you find something in this deck lacking. Alternatively, Rite of Consumption
could be used instead of Fling
to turn this into a mono-black (with a few other tweaks).
EDIT (21/04/25): With Kuldotha Rebirth and Deadly Dispute
being banned, two cards have been added in their place. First is Fanatical Offering
to replace Deadly Dispute
, a fortunate swap that, whilst not as good, still affords many of the same benefits. Second is Improvised Club
to replace Kuldotha Rebirth
. Objectively, this is a worse trade as we end up with less bodies for our aristocrats, but we get more removal and can churn out more direct damage.
I hope you enjoy this deck, and happy flinging!
