This is my take on a Vintage Merfolk deck. The basic concept of the deck is that we're a fair deck that's going to try and force the opponent to play fair, where our evasive creature beatdown strategy gives us a marked edge. To do this, we have a deep lineup of counterspells (Cursecatcher, Force of Will, Mental Misstep, and Chalice of the Void), along with Null Rod to put the clamps on the powerful artifacts that are close to ubiquitous in this format. On the threat side, we have the Merfolk Lords, which pump our team and also leverage the fact that the majority of the format uses Islands. We also feature a threat most opponents struggle to interact with in True-Name Nemesis. Silvergill Adept keeps the gas flowing and provides a body to project the Lords' pump effects on. Last but not least, Phantasmal Image can copy your best threat, or whatever the opponent is up to.
On the sideboard front, we feature lots of countermeasures for the titans of the format. Steel Sabotage and Energy Flux help you fight off Workshops, Grafdigger's Cage and Tormod's Crypt help you fend off Dredge and Survival, and Flusterstorm gives you a bit more help against the likes of Storm while also being useful against the fairer decks.
