Description

This is a budget Commander deck where I am trying to use the Energy mechanic.

The problem with energy is making sure there is enough of it. Therefore, we need counter doublers that affect players, and so, for inspiration, I was looking at Infect decks, which you'll find Works in Progress and half-finished ideas on my profile for those. There aren't many!

Another way of making sure there's enough energy is to make the Enters the Battlefield (ETB) triggers happen over and over. This is why we want Panharmoniconimage for the initial play, and Muldrotha, the Gravetideimage or Journey to Eternity // Atzal, Cave of Eternityimage for the repeatable play once the permanents go to the graveyards. This makes cards like Dead Weightimage, Reclamation Sageimage or Ravenous Chupacabraimage amazingly efficient and easy to repeat removal.

Notice how there's almost no instants or sorceries? That's because we're playing these cards over and over. Even the enchantments will help with drawing cards and buffing the creatures we put down. Secrets of the Deadimage allows you to keep drawing from your library when playing from the graveyard so you see new cards, as does Antiquities War, Path of Discoveryimage, and creatures like Glint-Sleeve Siphonerimage. Gonti, Lord of Luxuryimage getting multiple procs means you're playing with the other players' cards as well. Sultai Ascendancy just helps filter, and sets up some self-mill if it's needed to get rid of too many dead drops.

Many of the cards get +1/+1 counters as well, so the abundance of proliferate, along with the Winding Constrictorimage will mean you're keeping the counters flowing and stacking.

The artifacts package requires some setup, but you'll be taking a 2-drop Decoction Moduleimage, into the 3-drop Fabrication Moduleimage to ensure each separate trigger of gaining energy is providing +1/+1 counters to the creature just entering the battlefield, and 4-drop Panharmoniconimage means it will happen twice. This basically makes each smaller 2-drop creature ETBing into a monster very quickly, and provides a lot of sources of energy to draw cards, drain life, ramp, or pump creatures. The energy, counters, and

Closers: the big electric sky-whales, Aethertide Whaleimage or Aethersquall Ancientimage, and Aetherwind Baskerimage will close games. One knocks the rest of the creatures on the board off to clear the way, and one is impossible to kill since you can return it to your hand for positive energy amounts. You should be attacking with the whale each turn if you can to generate energy. With all the ETB smaller creatures, the Basker will be able to be pumped +10 or more quickly.

Also, both Planeswalkers will help close out the game. Of course, hitting the ultimate on Vraska, Relic Seekerimage means the game is almost over for someone, but between her and Tezzeret the Schemerimage you're getting Etherium and Treasure Tokens that can become 5/5s with Antiquities War or Tezzeret's ultimate. They're both turn 3 ultimate planeswalkers, and due to the recursion built into this deck, you'll get some value out of them.

Problems with the deck: You need to find the protection for Muldrotha. Some kind of hexproof or shroud equipment is necessary to make sure they don't go early and you keep them out to grind value. I don't really have any in here other than recursion from the graveyard instead of paying commander taxes.

2nd Problem: The manabase is based on what i have in my collection. Since I play mono-colors in Standard, no Modern, and Brawl or Commander for my only serious constructed formats, I don't shell out for good lands. These are almost all taplands unless I got fast/check lands in swaps with friends. You could improve it a lot, but it will easily cost a lot of money too.

With all the War of the Spark proliferate cards and less expensive planeswalkers coming out, I'm excited for the bump Energy mechanics could get from it. Let me know if you have ideas for improving the deck while keeping it relatively budget at under $100 total. Thanks!
