Learn more Download For WindowsMy personal take on Izzet Control. tl;dr gameplan is to stop your opponent from casting early threats, stabilize in the midgame with crackling drakes, and switch to an offensive gameplan once you're at an advantage.
Ionizes over Sinister Sabotages due to the more flexible mana (1UR is easier to come by than 1UU, even with 17 blue sources).
Niv-Mizzet, Parun offers amazing late-game power through draw and removal. Its really self-explanatory. And should your opponent throw some spell-based removal, they're 2-for-1ing themselves.
Ral Zarek, Viceroy's ultimate goes off surprisingly often. You only need to protect him for three turns, and once he does go, you're basically guaranteed to win.
Never underestimate Blink of an Eye. It's an incredibly flexible card that can deny opponents their tempo, can take a blocker out for surprise lethal, and doubles as removal against tokens. It can also draw you a card if you have some spare mana.
The rest is pretty standard, tbh.
Sideboarding: Banefires offer more reach and make Ionize's damage even more significant. On control matchups, its uncounterability will certainly come in handy.
Beacon Bolt gives you removal versus green stompy and any other problem creature.
Fiery Cannonade is very powerful at instant speed and handles aggressive decks with relative ease - shame it doesn't deal with chainwhirlers though.
Selective Snare gets rid of any problematic token, while also handling boros/jeskai angels.
Sentinel Totem denies your opponent their graveyards, making it a very strong card against Golgari decks.
Maybeboard
Detection Tower certainly deserves some consideration. There's enough hexproof in the meta to make it valuable.
Lava Coil deals more damage than Lightning Strike but loses the instant speed. I prefer the flexibility of instant speed damage, but I can't deny that Coil has its place in the meta, what with all the problem x/4 creatures that strike can't handle gracefully.
Star/Jenny player that tries to brew new stuff with weird cards! Plays far too much Izzet for her own good.
